so my car has found a new trick (more on that in a min)
for those of you who are unaware, i have a 54reg HDi GTi, it has been mapped up to stage 1 and DPF removed, ever since i have been plagued with the anti pollution fault occuring every 300 miles or so. i have swapped out the boost sensor, and the doser pipe that was split, since then i thought id cracked it. but nope today the fault was flagged again. took the boost sensor off, gave it a clear (with tissue) swug it about a bit to clear the hole in it. reconnected, and 3 re-starts later the fault is clear. so i now know it the sensor getting clogged with oil.
however its new trick,
on the way home from work, it went into limp mode (sluggish accelleration, didnt want to go beyond 2200rpm (when in gear), just as i was rounding the second to last corner from my drive, limp mode dissapearered and plumbs of white smoke appeared out the exhaust, got to my drive and turned the engine off.
called my dad out, turned the car over and it smokes like a chimnley, so my dad seems to think there is a piston ring gone, as the turbo sounds ok (for ok i mean not one that is destroyed inside).
so anyone have any helpful clues, i knew the turbo was struggling but could this be a sign the seals have now failed ????
that is just a guess based on what i have been told.

gasket is my first call but i am not sure if this is common in DV6 as DW10 seldom failed on head gasket

ill get it checked over tomorrow, but i just wanted a rough idea of how much it may cost, and thank god i have a warrenty on it

you might need a new head or do quite a lot of skimming
HDi run very high compression (pressure); if the head gasket blown it will cause a lot of damage to the head.

Head gasket job is usually around £400-£500 as seabook said may need some extra work if is Megga f****d.

Yeah my warrenty covers upto £750, and my mate will do the work so probably be abit cheaper than that, the only other thing wrong then is the turbo

Warranty won't cover it if they find out you have had it mapped.

called the aa out as i have home start + roadside + relay (basically everything i can get)
and its the turbo thats gone, so called the warrenty company and the turbo is not covered anyway :(
however found a garrett T15, re-manafactured (with 12 month warrenty from garrett) for £400 on ebay

You have a warranty on your car that doesn't cover the turbo? if it doesn't cover that it wont cover anything! cancel it and try get some money back to pay for future repairs.

Quite a few of the standard warranties that are given at second hand traders don't cover turbos. Even when they do cover them, they squirm around the excuses like poor maintenance or the wrong oil and will even try the wear and tear route. I've known cars be off the road for weeks and months while the warranty company decide if they should pay out. By the time they have then the customer has usually paid out of their own pocket to get the car repaired and then begins the lengthy process of trying to recover the money.
Personally I wouldn't touch used car warranties as they are not usually worth the money.
Edit. Here is a list of what one of the online companies will cover and the list of optional extras. Basically a con unless you are prepared to pay £££ extra each year.
