To cut the story of how it happened short, the gearstick pops up and down a lot more than it should do;
In its highest position, it can engage gear but doesnt feel to 'slot in' to gear.
The level below that it slots into gear but feels like moving a shovel through water, very unsure of itself.
When pushed down, a thud is heard/felt and the gearstick is back to its normal position, engaging gears fine etc. However when shifting and engine revs are above 2k itll pop back to the 'middle' position

Quick SOS call to a couple members on here suggests its either Rear engine mount (which seems fine, no odd movements or noises apart from a louder rattle at the 2k point) or gear linkages.

Basically, somethings hit the fan and smeared all over the room. Any ideas guys? Any help much appreciated.

Thanks to Dave for accepting my call and not thinking "WTF what an absolute moron" Very Happy

The shits hit the fan for you then. (couldn't resist :D)

If the gearstick moves up and down a lot then inspect the balljoint like you said, it could even be loose bolts. I would check under the car first, grasp the rod, pull it, push it and give ita good shake Very Happy

Problem solved! Gear linkage was f******g held together by cable ties. I'm not joking. About 100 cable ties. And i'm guessing its been like that for a while. Sorted it for now but thats one that definitely needs attention on Monday

Ahhhh that is quite amusing.

I have supported my backbox with stainless cable ties before when I didn't have any hangers.
