I've had a problem with my 206 Quicksilver (1.4L Petrol Manual) which I noticed a couple of months ago.

Whenever I take my foot quickly off the accelerator, or change down gear and take my foot off the clutch quickly without having added enough power I'll get a quick 'squeaking'/'slipping' sound, the kind of sound I would imagine if the clutch was slipping briefly (although the tachometer is not showing any increase in engine speed). Sometimes it is a double-squeak instead, and the sound had been getting worse.

I took the car down to the local garage for a service and their advice was that as long as the noise doesn't get too much worse it would be very expensive to get the gearbox apart to see what was happening (in comparison to the value of the car anyway!) so turn the radio up and keep my fingers crossed for now!!

Then suddenly the other day when I was accelerating up in 2nd gear I put the clutch down and shifted up into 4th I think- at some point during this there was a 'clunk' and I became aware that the clutch pedal was no longer attached to anything! Fortunately I could drive it without the clutch and managed to pull in by a garage further along the dual carriage way.

Now due to a combination of me still trying to get used to the Irish accent and me not being 100% familiar with the internal workings of a car, I was only just able to piece together what he said was wrong, but basically I think the conclusion was that there was something in the clutch that was jamming, and that by working the clutch lever on the gear box he had managed to get it free and reattached the cable to the pedal.

Since then everything seemed to work perfectly, there were no noises and the clutch in some way (although it may be been psychological) seemed to feel better. However, after another 20 miles or so it seemed to be back to making the noise, and today the clutch went again (although seemed to 'reattach' itself a few seconds later.

I've taken the air filter out, worked the clutch lever around by hand in both directions and squirted plenty of penetrative oil around where it enters the gearbox housing (I assume that can't do any harm) but it hasn't done any good either!

Has anyone got any ideas as to what this might be?! To be honest the car only needs to last another 6 months or so anyway but I would appreciate it if it could at least limp through getting me to work for a bit.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

you need a new clutch cable.

but saying that... most likely the clutch is at the end of it's life too

Ok, thanks, I was hoping it would be something relatively simple!

The clutch itself doesn't seem too worn- I've put it into fifth and slowly let the clutch up it doesn't come up any further than half way (and it's only got 50k miles on it). I suppose it's worth getting them to look at it anyway!

Cheers for that!

it is odd that the cable worn out quicker than the clutch.
