Hi
I am wondering if anyone can help me. I have a 206 2ltr hdi and it always runs at 80 degrees. Ive read on here that it should run at 90 degrees. The main problem is that when sitting in slow moving traffic the engine temp rises to the last mark before the red and the fans havent cut in. The strange thing is that with the ignition on I've temp rise by itself without engine running. Ive checked the fan with a screwdriver and fuse 8 and the fan moves ok and the fuse was ok but changed it anyways. What should I check first fan relays resistor or coolant temp sensor? As the gauge rises without the engine running.

mine has no fan, it sits at about 85degrees. when its hot and im in trafic for a very long time it may go up to 90degrees but never over. sounds like you could potentialy have a problem with the engine coolant temperature sensor. if not that then sounds like your engine is overheating

Hi Thanks for the reply. I was thinking coolant temp sensor myself. It doesnt rise quickly it takes time. But i was thinking temp sensor as it does it without the engine running but ignition on. Its not got as far as putting the stop light on. And it's not loosing coolant. If its any help to getting the problem diagnosed the slow speed fan doesnt come on when the ac is on either. Is it fairly straight forward to change the coolant temp sensor?

yes it is easy to change the sensor and fairly cheap too.
when you say the temp goes straight up even with the ignition on do you mean after the engine has warmed up to that temperature? like you run the engine to say 98degrees and then switch the engine off and then ignition on and its still on 98degrees. or does it go to the red from cold?

What happens is. When i was away with it last week i stopped in a layby and turned it off after the temp rose to 90 from 80. When it stopped the engine I left the ignition on and then it started to go past 90 with the engine off. Thats why I started thinking it was sensor related

could potentialy be a problem with the sensor.
but to me it sounds like the engine is boiling up, id have a garage check it out as if you keep driving it could cause more damage to the engine.
Have you opened the cap slowly when its hot? i its boiling up there will be some serious pressure in there and steam will come out. but be careful

I would have thought if it was boiling up the garage that i was being serviced at would have noticed. Or it would do it when driven for a long time which it has been on quite a lot of journeys. The one time where it got to the last mark before the red as the fan didnt come in. When i got back home I let it cool for a few hours but checked the coolant and it hadnt lost any and none came rushing out the reservoir to meet me. Which I would have thought would happen if it was boiling. All i got was the usual slight release of pressure which I believe is normal for a cooling system. As when you start moving again the temp will come back down within 2 minutes. That was when i started to think that the fan would have kicked in and it didnt. And I think it is related to the fan relays or sensor as the slow speed fan doesnt come on with the A/C on.

maybe ive not explained the fault properly. When it started to rise over 90. I turned the ignition off completly. And then after 10 minutes i was ready to drive off and it was sitting at 90 and after moving off came back down to 80 within about 2 mins where it sat quite happily. As the air would have cooled it down. When the fan wasnt working.

well that sounds normal.
as for the fan, remove your front bumper and crash bar (very easy) and in the fan cowling to the left there's a panel with some push clips holding it in, take the cover off and check the relays behind as these and the wiring upto the is due to corroding.

When switch off you get heat soak because of the lack of air flow
that's why your temp will rise. fan relays I would check like was said above,
but I left my bumper on but was tight to work in

Thanks for the replies folks I will give the relays a check over. When I can get the relays so I can change them over. Will update when checked, hopefully this will solve the problem that I am having!
