GTI 180 Engine Conversion - Possibilities?

I have no intentions of converting the engine but I am curious as to what engines can actually be put/fit into the GTI 180 with the right equipment/persons etc.

I know that deadeyepaul (i think it's him) has a 3L V6 in his GTI, so that's one possibility. Despite my lack of mechanical knowledge I think I am right that you cannot put any engine into any car.

So, getting to the point, uless the list is endless or long, does anyone have a list of cars whose engines can be put into the 180 with a reasonable cost if undertaken correctly (and not having to replace 25 other things as well as you may as just well buy a new car!)

I no a friend who has just fit his 205 with a mitsubishi evo engine so all engines will go in any car its just a matter of how much u want to spend

you can put any engine into any car

Well that stopped my farting in church didn't it?

I take it the idea is that people buy cheap old bangers with good engines such as the old Astra GSI (the corsa redtop is probably the most common example) or even a cheap EVO one of the old IV models or something with low mileage and then pay a garage to fit the engine?

I would assume it's cheaper to have the engine available and just pay for the fitting and the other bits and bobs to make it all go together - though I would also assume this alone costs several thousand anyway?

most likely you need a hell lot more than just the engine.

unless both car use the same gearbox, otherwise you will need the donor gearbox as well.

driveshafts, engine mounting point, all the aux stuff...essentially everything inside the engine bay.

More tuning potential?

THP 175 lump + mods good for 250 ish bhp with not too much spenditure?

Afterall he has killed the 180 lump I'm guessing lol

To get a 180 engine to 200 bhp would be around the same as 250 out of the above surely lol

207 GTi engine could be a very good conversion. Doesnt do too badly in the 207. The 206 is 150kg lighter.

It used to be a 1.4 16v sport, the orignal engine had no room for improvement(as its well known knowledge on the forum)

The thing you have to consider when getting your new engine will be.
Does your current setup have a hydraulic clutch? If it doesn't that's is another cost.

do you want to keep your air conditioning? (the thing weighs a tonne and removing it will save weight)

gear box is your current one sufficient? (more than likely your new engine will come with one)

Wiring, is your current car a non-plex model or is it multi-plex.

Exhaust, can it take the power of the new engine

If you already have a gti 180 why not just get a turbo conversion for £3.5k-£5k Smile bigger power gains but standard displacement

Gary, my wizard mechanic quoted me for 2500 (with the hydraulic clutch upgrade, gearbox, gear linkages, new engine mounts, radiator.. Basically everything to get the engine to work in my car)
I am also getting him to put a BMC induction kit, brand new exhaust (de-cat) and a single piece driveshaft(better cornering) so all the extras I am getting totals to 3120. Which is not expensive considering all the work that goes into it!

AC pump, radiator and all plumbing weighs 10kg. Not much.

Okay, so I've just seen an advert for just under 2k on auto trader for a BMW 7 Series 750I V12 5.4 Litre from 1998, it has just over 100,000 on the clock.

Supposing someone fitted this to a 180 it would probably be as quick as an Audi R8 because of the power to weight ratio (it's just over 320bhp on the BMW)

This begs the question to engine converters and would-be converters, why don't you do that? Instead of spending 8 grand on a turbo kit or 3k on throttle bodies. Let's get this right, 3 grand for throttle bodies to add an extra 40bhp or maybe 5/6 grand for 5 and half litre V12?! It may cost a lot and the fuel consumption figures would be like donating fuel to every passing driver, sure. But still? Thus I suspect there is more to it than just "you can convert any engine"?

I mean wouldn't it be a dream to have a 5.4 Litre V12 in your car? Obviously not so, right?
