Well I haven't seen the service history yet so it may have already been sorted out.

Why?

EDIT: f*** it CBA.

Why bother asking? There are many people on here who are very knowledgeable with HDi's, none of which would touch the 1.6 HDi, for many reasons which have been pointed out to you.
THEY ARE A MONEY PIT. Get that into your head. They have many "features", which were first put into production on this engine, meaning it acted as a form of "prototype". These engines had MANY problems which have been listed, FAP, DMF, turbo etc etc etc.. And you've only got to look at the newer HDi's which don't use the same "technology", to realise that its all a load of s**te.
You could put £750 towards a 2.0 HDi 90, which with an FMIC and a remap would probably push at least 130bhp, if not more (I'm not THAT clued up in HDi tuning). And you'd still have money to spare, without having to have a separate fund for "repairs". It seems silly that you have to have a fund for car repairs, if you keep money aside for car repairs, surely you'd think twice about buying it!

Welcome , I'm sure if you looked you could find a decent 2.0 and use the 750 on tax and insurance.
Your money though

I have no interest in remapping for extra power.

Okay.. so whats actually making you choose the 1.6 110 GTi HDi over the 2.0 HDi?

I'm not ignoring your advice, I took much advice when I bought my current car many moons ago. People said it was going to be a money pit and would break down a lot, but its broken down 3 times in 7 years.
I respect you for your knowledge and experience, but some people do have good experiences of cars and I'm sure i'll be eating my words in a few months time if something happens.

I'm lost.. why come on here, ask advice on a particular engine, even understand yourself that its problematic, be given details on the problems this engine has, how expensive it can be to repair, and still go and buy it?!
Best of luck.. I guess. Although, a part of me can't wait for a "FAP/DMF/Turbo problem" thread appears on here, and everyone will say "told you so".

Welcome
I have no comment on the 1.6HDi as I have no experience of them. (pointless post? Probably lol)
If your heart is set on one, and you know the risks, then go for it, at least your prepared.
But, I have a 2.0 hdi and I dont believe the extra 20bhp from the 1.6 will make that much difference at all on normal day to day driving. And the MPG isnt that different.
1.6HDi - around 58MPG
2.0HDi - around 56MPG

is low mileage diesel a selling point? maybe true for the DV6 but certainly not quite true for the DW and XUD.
it is not uncommon for the DW and XUD diesel hit over 300K miles, if you look after it well.
The best example i have seen so far is over 470K miles on a C5.
3 breaks down over 7 years is quite a lot to me.

You do know that a decent remap on a HDI will be way better economy than the 1.6 anyway
So for the sake of a remap you will have more than 110bhp AND better mpg AND a better engine - it's nice to be different but apart from that there is little point

Also worth listening for seized rear calipers (a fairly rhythmic squeak that varies with your speed, and may not always occur -tends to stop under braking) - that was priced at £180 per side (because changing the caliper involves other bits and bobs being done too). |
£360 for 2 rear calipers???
