Hiya guys, just a quick question...

Ive got a 2001 Y reg 206 GTI. I bought a new sensor as stated in topic, but it was all green, the one I took out the side of the engine is all green except a yellow band. Does this matter?

When I plugged in the new sensor the car wouldnt tick over correctly, like going from 300 revs to 800 then 300 then 800, about 2 times a second. Was like this for 3mins then I gave up and replaced the old sensor.

With the old sensor in the engine, it does the same thing when cold, but after 1min (warm up time) the engine idles smooth as silk.

Can anyone send me a pic of their coolant temp sensor and if it has any yellow band around it close to the thread on the green plastic, furthest away form the connection plug wire.

And would a dead/dying coolant temp sensor cause my problem?

They are normally just green. Yellow is a seal of some sort is it?

sorry for late reply, been slaving in a facotry Sad hehe.

erm, no idea, when i plugged in the new sensor, it didnt work at all, engine was spluttering like crazy. putting old sensor back in and all was fine. and the shop i use had 3 on its computer system for the GTI alone, but none had a yellow band around them. all 3 had same connections, just different colours.

Its not a seal, no. Its just a yellow band around the green plastic, ill try and get a pic tomorrow.

I have just hijacked this picture from another thread on this site, if the owner does mind I will remove the picture. but this picture shows a green coolant temp sensor with the same yellow band around it, same as mine, but not in the shop Sad

That's my picture. Can't see a yellow band at all.

Coolant sensors can be had from Euro Car Parts. Part number 224735211.

Why do you suspect the temp sensor? Have you tested it with a meter?

Cheers for the part number, but its still the wrong sensor, tried it off eurocarparts, made my tick over insane.

Any ideas for my engine being horrid and lumpy tick over when cold, but perfectly smooth when warmed up?

Also, the worst part about it is, sometimes even when cold starting, the engine is fine. Tick over is fine. Sometimes when cold starting its lumpy like 300rpm to 800rpm, bouncing.

Cheers for the part number, but its still the wrong sensor, tried it off eurocarparts, made my tick over insane.

I think you'll find that yellow is the sealing rubber lip on the plug connector, not a band on the sensor.

There are two types of engine/dash gauge (dual ellement) sensor for a 1.4i at least.

ill get a close pic of mine. Its solid plastic. No seals between that or the green plastic. Just a chabge in colour, evenly printed on.

It might be a seal afterall, judging by the way the grime has set. not 100% sure tho. can't feel any change though, and no ridges, which you would expect if it was a seal.

Is anyone elses the same sensor colours as mine?

Plug the car in to any scanner that gives live data and see what the coolant temperature is.

Lumpy idling could be down to dodgy lifters...all sorts of reasons.
