But how long will it last. I imagine if the bearings are knackered then the stub pin will be damaged too which means new bearings will have a short life.

If you are asking how tio check for bearing play you are better off running it into your nearest local garage (doesn't need to be Peugeot specialist), tell them what is happening and get their diagnostic. Most agarges will even let you accompany them or point out the problems while it is on the ramp.
You might need to ask nicely but ask in advance. You sound quite ineperienced to be diagnosing faults and then probably throwing lots of money at something wrongly diagnosed.
