why would you pick 140 over 180 unless it was because you simply couldn't afford it

The 180 is a lot better equipped than the 140. So 180 is a clear winner. Unless you wanted to do a lot of engine work then I'd recommend the 140

Well that's a stupid question if there ever was one...

I would go for the 40 bhp less model loosing out on the suspension revisions and a few less luxuries... because it's got more tuning potential to get it up to 180 stock figures ^^.

Definitely recommend the 180 over the 140, i've just upgraded from the 140 to the 180 and it is far superior than the 140 and I seriously don't regret buying the 180

Good God, I hope you're not comparing cars based on their top speed?

I've only got a 138. I must be a peasant. The 180 wasn't out when I got mine.

This was more true when the cars were newer but if you planned serious modification work then it didnt make sense to pay a premium for a newer 180 when all the changes that made the 180 different to the 138 would be put in the bin.

2001 GTi 138, Bilstein Sprint dampers, H&R springs, 21mm Peugeot Sport torsion bars, 22mm rear ARB, Peugeot Sport Group A wishbones, 283mm discs, Goodridge stainless hoses, Maniflow 304 grade 4-2-1 2.5" manifold and system, 200 cell cat, Richard Longman head, 45mm Jenvey throttle bodies, 9.5mm TB spacers, 90mm air horns, Jenvey throttle linkage, Jenvey fuel rail, Aeromotive and Goodridge fuel fittings and braided hose, ITG sausage filter, Radtec custom radiator, Piper Ultimate Road cams, Piper vernier pulleys, Omex 600 ECU. Saxo electric PAS pump, Vibra Technics engine mounts. Samco coolant hoses, TTV steel flywheel, 4.76 final drive ratio, 307 CC 180 ratios. 2019 BMW 530i. 2017 Mercedes C300 convertible.

If I had to choose between those 2 it would be the later 138 GTI with standard ESP.
