Hi all
My 1.4 hdi has just failed its mot on

1. Near side front tie bar / rod ball joint dust cover excessively damaged so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt

2. Near side from tie bar / rod has excessive play in a ball joint.

Can anybody tell me what part I need to change. I have been under the car and cannot find any boots that are damaged.


Edited to add, also failed on rear break load sensing valve seized, but I have managed to free that off.

Anti roll bar tie rods - about 10in long go from the ARB up to the strut below the spring pan. Have replaced both sides on my daughters 206.

Nuts tend to rust solid and the joint rotates, have a nut splitter handy if you are DIYing (or angle grinder - but access is tight).

I have just gone out and looked at those and they seem solid. Boots are in good condition. I cannot find any boot that is split/ damaged. Hope the garage are not trying one on.

I think I will pop back during the week so they can show me the problem

The tie bar is from the steering rack to the hub, the balljoint and dust cover are on the underside of the hub where it connects, have a check there to see if they're damaged..

The ones stevesey explained sound like the droplinks/swaybar..

That was my original thought. The track rod end. Had a look at all the boots and all seem good. Can't really tell if there is any wear when the cars is jacked.

Seen a replacement for about £15 so if that is the part they mean then its not so bad.

I'll find out later this week and post up what they actually meant.

Yep droplinks in my case - working on the basis that they'd say "track rod ends" for the steering ball joints Ste refers to.

Looking at eurocarparts they use the term tie rod for the part for the rack to the track rod end.

Like you say if both ARB links and track rod ends look good getting them to show you might be best.

So its the passenger side tie bar ball joint similar to a track rod end...thats the tie bar made about ten inches long with a small ball joint made with it on one end...the joint has a small rubber seal to it to keep it greased up of about half an inch tall..

Then the joint goes threw a thick rusty steel hole with the threads from the joint sticking out it has a nut holding the joint in place which will be stiff to remove...

You will be wise to goto local tool shop and buy a ball joint seperator for around £8 and get the tool man to tell u how it works if its not obvious...

Heavily hammering and forcing this tool between the hole and the rubbered side of the ball joint will stop spinning so u can get the nut off then u can replace the ball joint/tie bar and it should now pass its test as both q1&2 are on the same part...easy really..

Well it was the drop link. Bloody nightmare to get off. Had to dig the grinder out in the end but it's stopped and retest passed.

Ended up doing the off-side on my daughters six months after the near side as daughter was detecting some suspension noise (how amongst the numerous rattles that 206's come with I'm not sure). It is easer second time around when you know what you are up against!
