I have a 2001 pre-plex 1.4 LX, and on my way back home, it suddenly got very loud under acceleration, as though the exhaust was blowing, and the power just dropped off.
I turned onto quite a steep hill, and just had to drop down the gears, but eventually it just cut out. From there, it would not start; the starter motor was turning fine, but it would not fire.
I called out the RAC, and when he tried it, it wouldn't start, so he took the cover off the timing belt (?), tried it again, and it fired up no problem. No faults were showing on the reader. I then ran it the remaining 12 miles home, with him following just in case, but it ran perfect.

Now I'm stumped, as it fires up perfectly, and I can't get it to replicate the fault, but I don't want to risk a long journey in it, in case it f**ks up again, and leaves me stranded.
Any ideas, anybody?

Probably a loose connection that in removing the cover the RAC guy has disturbed and is now making connection again.

The only thing you can do, if this is then case, is go around all the connections and make sure that they are pushed fully home and secure.

While you would think this should be limited to connections around the timing cover who knows what connections he has put his hands on to steady himself when leaning in over the bonnet.

There is a chance that there is a sensor (crank position, throttle position, MAP, MAF) that is failing when hot. The time it took for RAC to arrive and remove the cover has allowed the sensor to cool and work correctly again.

Was it just loss of power or was it also mis-firing?

Unable to replicate and no fault codes makes it a bit of a bugger to diagnose.

If you no longer trust it I'll give you £50 for it (joke.)

Any lights come up on the dash when it started misfiring?

My first thought was immobiliser. Don't know if the 206 has the feature where it puts the car into limp mode so that you can safely pull over and then shuts the system down completely.

No lights on the dash, and defo no 'limp mode', the power just died.

I thought coilpack, myself, but would it not be permanent, if the coilpack was buggered?

I'll have a look around the connections tomorrow, but I don't think that will be it, although a failing sensor is a possibility, as I had just driven about 80 miles.
