I know it's cold and this might affect starting of the car in the morning, but needles now reset every time I start the car, also the clock and radio reset, would it be worth giving the battery a charge? Or would I need a new battery, garage have said a new battery but not sure if they just want me to buy a battery of them?

Help appreciated,

Thanks,

Ryan

If it's not a sealed battery, check the electrolyte and top up with cooled, boiled water if necessary.

It's always worth trying the cheapest method first. Give it a charge and see if it will hold charge over the next couple of days. If it doesn't, you've lost nothing and go buy a new battery.

the lower voltage when start your car up can be very dangerous, specially on the ECU,make things go faulty, and specially your dial needles.

A fully charged good condition battery on a warm day should be 12.6V but in weather like this around 0 deg C will be 12.1V.

If your battery isn't fully charged or is getting tired it could be even less than 12V before you turn the key.

Low battery voltage and thicker engine oil because of low temperature make for poor starting and very low battery voltage when cranking the engine. When cranking the battery voltage in this weather for a poor battery could be 8V or less! I have measured and seen these voltages.

Cold weather cranking on my daughters 206 1.4 pre Plex with weak battery was 7.9V and that would still start the car. Only just and very slowly cranking but it still started.

Morris 1000, Austin 1100, Escort Mk2, Fiat Mirafiori, Alfa 33, Alfa GT Junior, Alfasud, Alfetta GTV (2x), Alfa 164 3.0 V6, Alfa 164 2.0, Alfa 75 V6, Alfa 156 2.4 (diesel remapped 200bhp), Alfa 147 GTA (3.6 295bhp), Alfa 159 (diesel remapped 245bhp 300ft.lbs @ 2500rpm)
Why isn't my daughter an Alfaholic?
