Issues with my Airbags.

Help........

I have an issue with my airbag. When I start my car it churps at me the screen in the middle says Airbag Fault and the light on the dash comes on. A few seconds later it happens again. To clear the message of the middle screen I have to press the little button on th end of the wiper stalk twice, as if there is a problem with 2 airbags. The light on the dash stays on.

I have read several other questions on this site and the answer comes back check the plug under the seat or battery.

The odd thing with my car is that the plug has always been out as long as I have had the car and this warning is a new thing.

Does anyone have any ideas? It is an 02 GTI with seat airbags and is Plexed (if that is the one with the chunky radio control?)

I think the car has had a smash at some point in its life
