Hello everyone.

Just posting to generally share some info and tell you guys about the problems I've had.

I decided to do a minor service my car yesterday because I knew it hadn't been done in a long time (I knew the previous owner and as far as I'm aware, he didn't service it in over 2 years).

Anyway, I replaced the air filter, oil filter, did an oil change and cleaned the throttle body butterfly valve. My MAP sensor was also causing fuelling problems and the car was misfiring and running badly, so I replaced that as well.

Now for the Oil Filter problems...

I tried searching online for which oil filter I would need, but it seemed that I couldn't find an answer anywhere because there are so many different types of filter for the car. I looked under the bonnet and realised that I needed the element type, not the cartridge type.

So I was planning on taking out the old filter to see which one I would need, and then go to Euro Car Parts to get it.

There was a bit of problem when I removed the oil filter casing...

I removed the cover to find that the old filter had disintegrated into mush leaving the plastic end caps stuck in the casings. Now I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure the filter isn't supposed to fall apart when you remove it.

I didn't take many photos because my hands were filthy and didn't want to touch my phone, but I took this pic of the old filter -

 


It was very difficult to see what the filter would look like because it was completely ruined, so it took me three trips to Euro Car Parts to eventually get the right one. For some reason their system only showed two options, either a cartridge or an element. The first element they gave me didn't fit. Turns out there was two different types of element filter and one of the staff had to manually look for it in the warehouse rather than rely on the computer to pick it.

Once I got the right filter, I started to clean out the oil filter casing. I soon relised that it was full of black mushy residue because of the ruined filter, so I decided to remove the casing from the engine block and clean it out thoroughly -

 


 


The centre hole was fine and wasn't blocked, but the hole on the right was full of the old filter element bits. I thought it was completely blocked and tried to unblock it for ages until I relised it was a spring loaded non-return valve Rolling Eyes

Once I cleaned it all up I fitted everything back together and the car now runs a lot better.

I think I'll keep on top of the servicing while I own the car to try and avoid anything like this happening again!

wow i never seen a filter break up like that before. That oil is blacker than the ace of spades!
Did you get clumps/lumps out the sump when you drained it?

Well I was quite worried when I first saw all of the bits because I thought they could be going through all parts of the engine, but I think the filter only broke up when I took the case off, so all of the bits were just inside the filter housing.

The oil that drained out of the sump was smooth with no bits in it, it was very black though!

It's a Y/2001 1.4. Not sure about whether it's 8v/16v to be honest.

can you not get an adapter and run the can type oil filter? cheaper as well

Not sure to be honest, don't know where I could get an adapter from. Would the canister type ones be easier in the long run?

the can will not fit due to the cat, found that out when i changed my block.

Also when i had the element filter mine came out in bits like that.

Genuine Peugeot / Citroen OR Purflux oil filter element only Wink

Aftermarket type element filters are known to cause issues.

Yeah It's running much better now. Replacing the MAP sensor has made a huge difference, and I think the minor service has done the car good.

The car now runs very smootly and is more responsive. Whether this is just because of the MAP sensor or whether it's because of the service, I don't know.
