Hi all.
In all seriousness, there's no dog, but there is a large amount of (dog like) hair hanging out of the back of my exhaust at the end of every substantial journey.
Its only been happening for the last two days, since the car passed its MOT straight away first time without any advisories. Surely a coincidence though?
I've read somewhere else that 'hair' coming out of the exhaust is the silencer and a common sign of the exhaust muffler failing and needs replacing.
Is this correct? any help much appreciated.
Car is 02 plate 206 1.4 Look.

Sounds like the back box has gone. Time to get a new one fitted

Haven't heard or seen this myself... But one way of constructing a muffler includes material like glass fibre insulation.
For it to leak like you describe I'd think that some of the internal tubing must have rusted away creating a much bigger hole than the small perforations that are there by design.

Its exactly what they showed, just keep pulling them out or get a new exhaust.
Your performance will be very down, and your MPG will have suffered no doubt.

Thank you very much everyone from your help.
I've not noticed any increase in noise or smell from the exhaust, but i did notice the MPG was rather oddly down.
Rather strange this happened for the first time the day after passing the MOT? Surely nothing in this though?
How much should i expect to pay for a new back box to be fitted at the garage?

It's possible that during the emissions test either the high revs have blown some of the material through, or if the garage stuck the probe up the exhaust it caused a bit of damage to the pipe.
A back box can cost anything from £50 upwards depending on the quality. They are easy enough to fit yourself with minimal skills but if you take it to a garage, they shouldn't charge more than a hour in labour, be lucky if it takes them more than 15 minutes to do.

I bet most fast fit exhaust places could change a 206 back box with there eyes shut with the amount of practice they get

I'm tempted to do it myself (my minimal skill should be enough!!), but cant find a 'How-to' guide. Anyone know of one?

If you cant work out how to change a simple exhaust back box without a manual then you really shouldn't be picking tools up in the first place.
