Hey Guys,
I dont know if this has already been posted, but i thought it would be easier to say exactly whats happening to my car rather than try and find one doing similar things.

The problem is, for no apparent reason and without warning, my car will just cut out when slowing down for junctions, roundabouts, and stopping etc. It will normally do when im slowing down past/around 20mph and only happens when im breaking. The Engine cuts and i lose power, everything, including power steering which isnt helpful when turning into a road.

I get no warning lights before hand it just happens, like its a stall. itll happen for a whole journey every couple months then it will be fine no problems whatsoever. nothing. then a couple months or so will pass and Then without warning ill be slowing and itll do it again. I need some advice as to whats wrong with it really if anyone can help? also when i start up again if i dont immediatly apply lots of accelaration itll just cut out straight away again.

Someone Please help, Thanks

Next time it does it try to keep the engine running with the throttle. If you can keep it running then I'd be very confident of it being the idle control valve.

Im guessing you mean keeping it running from turning it back on again? And yes if I use the throttle it doesnt cut out but if I dont and just turn it on a leave it idling it cuts after a couple of seconds ?

Well next time it wants to cut out just give it the slightest bit of throttle. Does sound like the idle control valve.

My bet would also be on idle control valve, had this issue many times with various TU engines. Can sometimes get away with cleaning it and resetting it but they do need replacing occasionally.

Almost certainly this. I had this problem a little while ago, a bit of carb cleaner on this and the throttle housing - and I've not had a problem since.

Ive had this trouble for ages now but it hasnt happened throughout this crappy snow/cold weather weve had for around 3 or 4 months, just the last week with the weather warming up the damned fault has returned? Im curious to see if it might be a summer/winter setting on the engine intake etc. if they have one??? Mines a 2002. 137gti and if anyone could tell me where to change the winter/summer setting(if it has one?)that would be of great interest thanks guys...

There is no summer or winter settings. If yours cuts out when slowing down and out of gear then yours will probably have the same problem too.

ICV valve problems don't flag up the ECU light or any fault codes.

Remove it, clean it and the hole it sits in. Very simple.
