Hey all,
I posted the other day about a new exhaust system being fitted to the car and since then having erratic revs and problems with the car starting. I was told to clean the ICV so followed the guide on here and the ICV and air pipes were full of crap also put a new air filter in at the same time. It solved the problem for about an hour and now im back to square one?
If the car hasnt been running it fails to start unless i have my foot on the accelerator and cuts out whenever i stop the car say at a junction or red lights etc... I have no Engine Warning Lights on and am completley out of ideas now??
It is a 2000 GLX 1.6 (the 8V one unfortunatley lol :p)
Any help greatly appreciated before i tear my hair out!!

I know.
Is it OK and starts OK and doesn't cut-out if the engine is warmed-up?

If the car has been running and sat at normal running temp then it doesnt cut out when i stop just jitters on the revs down to about 400 then shoots back to 900ish. It is always worse when the car has been stood for a couple of hours it will constantly go up and down from 900 to 300 and then just stall or most of the time not even start, hence why i thought it was the ICV but looks lke i was wrong!

Have you scanned for trouble codes in the ECU?
Do you know if it's been 'maped'?

No I was trying to avoid taking it to a garage if possible that full exhaust system has pretty much skinted me until next pay day. No it hasnt been mapped as far as i am aware (the previous owner had it from new and was quite an old bloke so unless he was into all that i dont think so lol)
If its inevitable that there is nothing else i can check before getting codes read then ill have to :/

You'll have to check for codes really.
Also bear in-mind that the stepper motor in the ICV sometimes goes faulty and cleaning it doesn't fix it.
When this happens, I'm not sure that a DTC (trouble code) is always stored in the ECU.
Interesting that this happened when you did the exhaust and air-filter though..
I would definately reset the auto-adaptation of the ECU personaly but others might say it's irrelevant.
If you take the car to a garage that has PP2000 setup, you could ask them to reset the auto adapt if nothing obvious comes-up with scanning.

Also, the throttle-position potentiometer springs to mind but why now?
Again, reading on Planet real-time data will show if that's working properly.

It's going to a garage for the codes to be read Monday morning (if any) the only ideas I have left are sensors failing or like you say the steeper motor.
No it's deffo not the battery Lee is only a year old and also one of the first things I checked Thanks for the suggestion though

I suggest that you repeat the ICV clean.

When you cleaned the ICV, and the filter hose, did you also do the throttle housing?

Had the codes read nothing came up at all they reckon it could be mixture but they dont have the equipment to do it so im lost...ill do another clean on the icv and check for any leaks on all the pipes. Which part is the throttle housing? I cleaned everything that was in that guide so if it was on there it was cleaned lol

I've not see the guide for a long time, so I don't recall if it mentioned this.
But when you take the filter hose off the housing, if you look inside the housing you'll see a 'disc' that opens and closes when you operate the throttle / throttle cable. (Or you can just push on this disc).
Clean as far behind that disc as you can get, and both sides of the disc as best you can, using a cloth with some carb cleaner on.
I'm sure I don't need to tell you, but don't drench the cloth in cleaner either!
