So, I've got a Peugeot 206 2001 1400 8v, that's built into a rally car. At the moment the engine is standard. We were wondering what is possible to get out of these engines. I've read about interchanging bits from 106's or 205's but was looking for a max power figure, and roughly how much it would cost to get there.

not much as far as I know,better to replace the engine for 1.6 8V,it got more power

The TU3 is pretty tuneable on the cheap, you can get decent power gains if you know what your doing.

I've seen claims of 100bhp on a remap alone. How accurate that is is debatable. I would guess that add an induction kit and exhaust then do the remap and maybe 107bhp?
From what I've seen on the cheap a remap can be done for £150, used sport exhaust from French Connection in Burnley for £30, and induction kits start at £30 on eBay. If you want to go down the road of cams etc I haven't done that on a car in many years but from my biking days I can tell you that it's not going to be cheap.
My 1.4 8v is standard and surprisingly quick so with 107bhp it would be a little rocket on the road but for rallying I don't know. I raced bikes many moons ago and they were all 2 strokes back then. Most went for outright power when tuning but I found going for torque made a huge difference. I'm assuming that in rallying the key to faster stage times is like lap times on a track, the drive out of corners and getting the power on early. The 1.4 seems to have a fair bit a torque low down the rev range so if I was racing it I would be looking to keep that torque where it is whilst increasing power.

From 70bhp?! That just not going to be true mate. Induction kits are proven to loose power with out a bespoke map as you are changing the conditions of the air flow it throughs all the ratios out of sync

To get good useable power you need to spend the bucks.... for rallying you need to know what your going to do. ...
Stage rallying in the 1400 class is going to need 120HP and CR box
For road rallying you need reliability and a good navigator but you can have a bog standard engine.

macj - I think you're right about the 120hp, I would idealy want between 125-130hp eventually. It's got an LSD, and a low-ratio peugeot sport gearbox on it at the moment, and I drove it on gravel last week and it really didn't feel slow at all. But, for the first few events the engine will remain pretty standard - just want to focus on reliability for now. Also, i seemed to have used about 3/4's of the engines oil over about 50 miles hardish driving on gravel, is that normal?
HowlingMadMurdock - I've already got an exhaust, and the induction kit could be an option. Even though it's pretty standard it didn't feel too bad power wise, that's right about the torque though - we need as much as possible really.

The oil consumption is a big issue.... sounds like it needs a freshen up or "top and tail"
forget the induction kit..... I would opt for the 1400 16valve engine from a 106 and stick it on bike carbs..... good engine which can be very flexible

Jakey I may not be any kind of mechanic but when it comes to speed on the track I knew my stuff. 2 strokes had very little torque and if you can get the torque it's a race winner. Getting that power down early is all that matters to me.

There wasn't a 1400 16v 106 iirc, do you mean the 1600?

There is a really good guide on the interweb somewhere about race tuning TU lumps, They can be bored out quite a lot iirc and some of the heads are interchangeable but I can't remember which ones. It would probably be of use to you if you can find it.

I think you will find that there is a French 16v 1400 engine. I have seen one in an AX
