Hi Guys, recently my 2002 gti has been using quite a bit of oil, it is not dripping out anywhere as it leaves no oil drips when parked, seems to use a lire or so every 1000 miles, engine temps also goes above the 90 degrees mark on long journeys when at motorway speeds. Car has done 95,000 miles but runs absolutely fine.

Was wondering what people might think the oil leak could be, am thinking head gasket may be but not sure.

Any ideas much appreciated

Cheers

Chris

Yeah a litre per 1000ml is a bit excessive,it must be burning it if you have no leaks..
Is it smoking much?both on start up and once warm??and does the smoke have a blueish look?im guessin it must have
Is there any build up on the tail pipe end?
What fuel do you use?supermarket basic or what?
For a possuble kwik fix next time you fill up fuel buy an engine de coke/cleaner from car parts shop...there will be a few so pick the one thats gonna clean the fuel system and the cylinders etc...follow the instructions...this may help?

Hi Eddie, thanks for the reply, no blue smoke at all from last time i looked, will check again later, fuel i put in is usual standard supermarket unleaded, sometimes i put in momentum 99 but not very often, may try the engine clean but am not sure how this will help a oil usage issue? may have to get under the bonnet again to check for possible leaks

Cheers

Chris

Well its definately going somewhere?
Id get right into the engine bay and check every inch no matter how unlukely looking...
The fuel additive will just clean internal components giving them a chance to work properly again and not waste oil...

As for your refueling habits ive always been told its one or the other,it sounds good to put the expensive stuff in occasionaly but your best off sticking to one type.. And stick to the same petrol station as much as you can aswell...Engines dont like to be switched and changed...if you use the ecpensive occassionaly trying to flush the engine or something its best just to continue with just one fuel
and use a fuel additive now and then if you like to...

Dont forget a healthy engine will usualy use some oil and while your levels are exsessive some use is normal...so maybe a small leak somewhere???
