Hi everyone. Got some weird stuff happening with my 1999 1.1 pug. First it started having to have idle issues (hunting from 1100~750) in the morning, followed the nice guide on how to clean the ICV. Worked great a couple of days then started it again but this time only at night and when its cold. It would cut off/stall when I go in neutral or when slowing (braking) down at a stop/round about (idle seems fine but when I go in neutral at some speed, it will just choke from whatever rpm it was to about 250). This time it was the throttle body's turn to get a cleaning. It did the same thing tonight. I actually fear it right now, its quite frightening losing PAS and brakes just when you need it!
I wonder if its not related to my 2y old battery's condition. Last time a pal of mine checked it after it went dead a couple of times. Voltage at rest was 7v and he told me to trash it. Might get a new one tomorrow since I guess 7v is a bit too low ain't it? Especially night driving when I would be using more power. It will run fine during the day with no issues. Some rare times rpm's would drop to 500 but will not stall. Night driving is another story!
Help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

If the battery is that bad think what it will be at night with even more current drain on it from external and internal lights !!Think you have answered your own question. Bin it and get a new battery.

Thanks for the replies guys. Got the new battery this morning. I'll report back if it was the real culprit. Engine did drop some rpms though this morning with the new bat hooked so I wonder... Since I changed the battery I guess I'll let the ECU learn when/how to settle to my driving style. Thanks, report to come soon!

maybe its scared of the dark and doesn't want to go out...
in all seriousness, I does appear to be a power/battery issue,
Hope new battery sorts it.

Bwahaha. Now that's the same joke my mech cracked at me!
Seems already that it ain't the battery. Wanted to die a couple of times already, clocked 60 miles since change. But I think I might be onto something. Will post pictures shortly. Thanks.

Where would that earth strap be?
Ok so here's what I found. Think its related to the power steering sensor? What does this part do? Regulate pressure? I found it was leaking oil from the plug and since the old plug was knackered, I changed it. But still running like a dog!
In fixing the sensor plug, I managed to break that hose. Taped it temporarily till I get another one. Again, what does this do?
Any ideas? I'm running out of em! Thanks!

On top of the gearbox, beneath the battery area.

Earth strap under the battery seems ok and well tightened to the body! Jeez this is so frustrating! Sapped my mood this week end... Will bite the bullet, take an off and go see a mechanic tomorrow. Will report back on this mysterious bug.
Got a question, if the power steering sensor is p*ssing PAS oil (since it seems broken), could it be a reason for rpm's to drop?

Are you sure that the idle control valve isn't faulty? By the way if you do try to change it make sure that it's the right one as there's a few with different shape heads.

When you cleaned the ICV did you do the MAP sensor too? The first time I did mine I was in a rush before work so just did the ICV which helped in the short term. When I followed Timon's guide the 2nd time and did the MAP sensor it was a different story and the car felt so different.
Silly question but when was your air filter last changed?

Hm hard to know for sure. After I cleaned it, it worked great during the day but the same night, car coughs whenever I lift my foot off gas. Runs fine when throttle is applied so I guess that rules out the coil pack/sparks/injectors? Seriously I have no clue as to what is causing this. Last days had a drop in temperature and now it even does this in daytime running, so the PUG sure isn't afraid of only the dark now! When I start the engine from cold, I have to apply gas for it to run. Man I'm so desperate. One day off work tomorrow to go and see my mechanic.
I will try and get another ICV and have a check. Thanks for your help!

@Howling. Nopes, didn't do that. Will do it tomorrow then, keeping my fingers crossed. Was in a hurry to test the car (and it ran fine) after I cleaned 1. ICV and afterwards 2. Throttle body and I missed that. Last air filter was changed 6 months ago, 5k on the clocks. One thing strange though, there was some kinda oily substance in the air filter hose going to the throttle body. Small amount. Don't know if that's normal. My first car was a Saxo, so much easier to handle than this one! That 206 is a whole new game!
Hey again thanks for your help/theories! I would be lost without em. Eh still lost but still, learning some stuff lol
