Probably a really standard basic question but then again I wouldn't even know how to change a tyre LOL. My 180's brakes have started squeaking at a certain point when coming to a stop, like when I'm doing 5 or 10 mph. It's strange, if I apply the brakes firmly or even slightly firmly they don't always squeak, but if I gradually come to a stop nice and slowly, when it gets to a certain point they will squeak a tiny bit and then after that it'll stop again. An easier way of describing it is that it doesn't squeak all the way to the stop or for ages, just at a certain point or perhaps when the brakes are pressed to a certain degree of firm-ness.

I thought it was originally because the brakes are wet (it used to very occasionally after my car had been washed etc) but in this dry sunshine it's obviously maybe the shoes or the pads are going or something.

The guy at Peugeot the other week said my brake discs are showing a bit of wear but they will still last until January when my service is due he said it wouldn't fail an MOT or anything at the moment, could this be it?

My car does this, had no advisories on an mot and the braking performance is still fine. And like yourself does it when braking gently, but if I stamp my foot, no squeaking is heard.
I have Peugeot Planet/DiagBox.

Brake pads could be glazed. Take them out, rub them over a piece of sandpaper to remove the glaze. Might as well rough the disk up while you're at it and then bed them in again as if they were a brand new set.

If you can't do it yourself the cost of stripping, cleaning and lubricating the parts isn't worth the cost to reduce the squeal. If it isn't affecting brake performance, it doesn't usually, then learn to live with it or pay the £30 - 60 it will cost to have them stripped and lubricated. Even then stripping and lubricating isn't guaranteed to fix it.
