Hi,
Need help, have a clatter on front suspension, happens when going over bad road surfaces. so working through drop links, bottom arms - although ball joints are fine etc (granted could be mounting rubber, but they do not look worn), have actually fitted a new NSF bottom arm and it still seems to be making a noise on that side over bumps etc.
I did this on last GTI and it did not cure and this sounds exactly the same. so thinking it may be the one or both suspension legs that may be worn.
The car is the GTI 180, my query is this, tried to source replacement legs (new), but been asked if they are oil or gas filled? To which I responded 'how the hell should I know'
Without cutting one open (not doing that LOL), how can you tell, the only marking on the legs is a factory looking sticker saying 'do not open' in different languages and the number 8359, is there a way to tell from that or as they look factory original, what was fitted to the 180 model (2004). Trid a google search, but not found anything yet.
Can supply VIN if that helps, cheers guys.

Could be top mount bearings? Also check the spring is seated correctly. Unlikely to be shocks, unless there leaking. They will be oil filled If standard.

Springs seated OK, had a top mounting (the rubber) go on last GTI and it was more on turning - was like a grinding/grumble when turning - the bearings had collapsed.
No visible leaks on the shocks/legs

I'd still go with top mounts. Mine needs them which I'll be doing when I have my coilovers fitted. Mine clunks over bumps, it's sweet on turn in ect ect just literally bumps and it's had new drop links, my springs ect are sweet not that they will matter for long. Saying that it could be my induction air feed clunking about, I cba to check that, either way I'll replace mine.

Do you get any noise when turning the wheel when your stationary? Could be the steering rack. Also check the calipers haven't got any play and the sliders are ok. I've had a few Vito vans with the same symptoms and these have been some of the problems.

No noise when turning on stationary or on move, just when hitting bumps.. Have new tops, so will fit them, going to try new drop links first.

Are you certain it isn't something else loose such as battery, battery tray, exhaust, air filter box, radiator etc. It is probably worth a quick check of every thing else before replacing parts.
Broken spring, not seen it on a 206 but had a few of various makes that break right on the top coil and is sometimes quite hard to see.

gpvecchi, think it is both sides, seems worst on passenger side (which has had a new bottom arm).
kandlbarrett - definitely the suspension, engine components & aux are secure.
Just waiting on some drop links to arrive, but having done a bottom arm, may have to be a garage trip to get the suspension tops changed - have the parts, but not the tools/facilities to strip struts down
