There just glow plugs i think, used for when the temp is below -5 and come on sometimes when the cars running on some to make it quieter.

Some one found google
Close but not correct. Glow plugs do operate only on cold conditions below -5 , but they are used for regeneration to increase combustion temperatures to help burn the soot away in the fap.
On diesels without fap, they are hardly used

The glowplug light never comes on on my 1.4hdi. Starts every time though regardless of temperature ...

I have to admit I envy you car knowledge and experience. Wish I had worked as a mechanic. Too late now though....
