Got a creak (fairly loud) from the rear of my 206 1.4 when pushing boot up and down and even just sitting in it. Tested this with tailgate open and spare tire off also handbrake on/off.
There is no play in the wheels (tires new so cant see any wear as just bought the car). The mechanic at the Garage I bought it from said he recently changed the trailing arm bearings but I understand that this can sometimes be too little/too late to save the axle.
Car drives fine and wheels seem rock solid with no play and I cant see any sort of real camber (although that's just me looking at the car whilst stood back, not very scientific I suppose), the wheels spin freely when jacked up.
Is it possibly something else I've failed to check and is it just a case of creaky rear suspension with an annoying sound I'll have to put up with ?
Cheers for any advice as I know that this is a common fault.

Dunno about 206's but I had the same problem with squealing in my saxo (they also come with the same common fault) drove me mad thought it was the rear seats a bit loose, come MOT Time turned out it was the rear beam. Safe to say it went straight on eBay!

mine also makes a creaking noise when people are getting in or out of the back of the car but i've never had any problems and thats after 4 years of it doing it

Take the car back to the mechanic/garage you bought it from, be confident but not pushy, and ask him to double check the back axle, as you are a bit concerned about the squeeking, and ask them what the squeeking is.
If at the end of their explainations (nothing to worry about) you are still concerned or a doubt lurking in the back of your mind, go to a couple or so other garages and see what they come up with, normally garages will do this for nothing if you use charm and common sense.
At the end of all this you will know if things are hunky dory or not.

The 306 owners club get this same design fault 'squeek' its the bearings on one side or the other drying out, as your mechanic did one side then its probably the other, one 306 member took his beam apart and drilled and fitted some grease nipples to stop the problem re-occuring.
If it starts 'groaning' then the chances are the whole damn beam needs a rebuild, sometimes this is fine but when I went to raise the ride hight on my 306 I found that one of the torsion bars was seized solid and needed some heavy press gear to shift it, I am going to fit a second hand beam with discs later this year, one that has been recently lowered so I know some other has had the pleasure of taking it apart.

Cheers for replies.
I suspect he didn't do a full refurbishment just enough for an unsuspecting punter (i.e me) to buy it. Also noise is from both sides.
I did get 3 months warranty with the car and although it was a only a small garage a warranty is still a warranty (and I also paid on credit card).
The garage is 90 miles away so I want to make double sure it isn't just a common harmless noise from the back. In hindsight I should have done more homework about this problem so I knew what to look for.
Would a fault like this be picked up on an MOT and would it also fail ?
I'm thinking maybe an independent inspection of some sort may help as the garage I bought it from are just probably just gonna say its fine to save a few £££££

Cheers that's quite a handy thing. Cars history looks Kosher and mileage correct. Last Mot fail was on a headlamp bulb, emmissions and
"Both rear Sub-frame has excessive play in a pin/bush (2.4.G.2)"
Would this have been the rear bearings being replaced because it was retested and passed

Same garage. I think that the rear axle bearings were replaced on both sides otherwise there would be play in the wheels but dunno how long these will last if the rear axle wasn't given a complete overhaul.
From what I gather replacing the bearings and seals is just a quick fix that wont last too long
