Had a search on the forum and I could see a few topics but unfortunately few answers.
Seems to have come on all of a sudden. Was hurrendous in the cold weather this morning and didnt seem to subside even after the weather warmed up.
anybody experienced this and more importantly fixed it?

Have you checked that you haven't got anything inbetween your tyre treads.
Whereabouts does it seem to be coming from?
Can it be heard at standstill.

Hi
It sounds like its coming from the cambelt side of the engine but I cannot determine if its from the top or bottom as it doesnt seem to do it whilst ticking over.

Could be the CV joint.
I've had a similar noise on my 1.4 since I've had it. Only obvious when the passenger window is down and is more noticeable when there is a hedge or fence on the N/S to bounce the sound back. I've had CV joints checks, brakes apart, taken the labels off the driveshafts in case it was one catching the air. Nothing stuck between the treads, swapped wheels to make sure it's not a valve or weight making the noise. Had the front jacked up and run the car upto 70mph on stands and nothing. Bit of a pain to diagnose, but if I keep the window up it's not noticeable. Definitely related to the tyre rotation as the clicks get closer together the faster I go no matter which gear I'm in, but not on every rotation. A very strange noise to diagnose.

Its not the CV joint. It sin direct relation to the throttle as it speeds up under revs. Just been out to move my car at wokr and was doing it on idle from start up.

  ,it worth checking,might be old and dry which means it needs to be replaced,also might be the generator bearing.

Seems to only do it ticking over from cold but can be heard under acceleration even when its up to temp.

i had/have two exact noises as yours on mine, one was cambelt tensioner (fixed) and other is the aux belt (not fixed yet) i will be replacing the tensioner etc on the aux belt soon.

Thanks for the heads up ben. I would have thought the noise is coming from the cambelt as it picks up with the revs? Would be gutted if i got tge cambelt, tensioner and pump changed and it wasnt that!!

Does sound like a tensioner to me. Try the aux tensioner first before you get into cambelt changes. Saying that, if it hasnt been done before it would be a good excuse to do it anyway.

The Aux. belt usually the one that cause the sound,because it's not protected,lots of water,dirt,and warm engine bay makes it dry faster than the cambelt,so replace the AUX. belt,with it's bearing and tensioner,and the sound will be gone,and you know,not just the cambelt that goes faster with higher revs.,as the aux. belt do the same,and it runs with the crank shaft pulley

Please don't spray your belt with WD40! 
It sounds like your Aux belt though, had the same problem weeks ago, changed the belt and its all good now
