Evening, owned saxo's/106's for a few years now, recently wrote off my 1.5d saxo on an eventful new years.
So, after looking around the price range i've saved up (£1500) i've decided for what i want (eco, but with the possibility for more oompf) i've opted for a 206. Currently shopping the market but will definately be a 206 with the 1.4 HDi lump.
Having only ever driven my mates old 206 petrol, i can't really remember that much about the apparently horrendous driving position, how do other 206 drivers feel about this? Is it bulls**t or do you just get used to it?
What are the reliability of the HDi lumps like? most advertised are 80k+ miles, obviously being well serviced (family of mechanics) i'm hoping to get double that before getting a new motor..
Performance wise, whats the crack? Remap/better intake/injectors/exhaust options? What am i looking to get realistically from the 68bhp diesel?
Sorry for the long post. Wanna make an informed decision wether to switch to the dark side again or get a VTS!

i got a 54 plate 1.4 hdi works van (and my own gti 180) and tbh i don't find the driveing position a problem at all. my hdi has just clocked 90k its never serviced last service was around 40k ago its thrashed every day without mercy and the only thing that has ever gone wrong was the bottom pully falling apart.
i really can't fault the thing still gets around the 50-55 mpg and with a real long road will hit around 98 mpg but takes a while to get there,will run at 75-80 easy enough all day long and plenty quick enough pick up to keep up with the traffic flow no problems.

I've read about the pulleys being made of cheese, is this true?? And are there replacement upgraded ones?
The car won't be getting track/boyracer abuse it'll be a commuter, social and the occasional euro-trip to france/germany.
Any gearbox problems or common drivetrain issues?

Also, GTI bumpers are the only difference with the 3 door and will fit front and rear in theory won't they? Torsion bar rear, springs front?

the old pully cracks around the hub but they made a new version which is stonger mate, no drivetrane probs with mine and as said it really is abused everyday as i don't have to pay for it lol lol

The dampened 2-part pulley can be replaced with solid pulley, either custom billet aluminum or newer 1-part pulley, but then you'll need to add overrunning clutch to the alternator.
Sport bumpers fit all models, but you may as well buy one with better spec that has them fitted stock. At least here in finland 5D 1.4HDi is available in both XR and XS spec.
I have the whole GTI 180 rear axle in my 1.4HDi. Drum to disc conversion needs only longer handbrake cables (and plexed rear axle with ABS).
300000km in the clock. Clutch replaced around 240k.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yerh, i've seen a few 3dr HDI's that have the GTI bumpers on... was rather confused.
Just checking its all a straight fit, scouring ebay for a clean 3 door example! Been beaten to the mark on 2 so far. It will come!

We had one for six years, five of which were remapped, which by the way transformed it (not into anything special, just better than it was to drive). Still had the same clutch and gearbox was just the same.
Biggest issues I had were a constant need to change wishbones and droplinks, but I live in a bumpy area.
I changed the alternator pulley as it was making an idle at rumble, the crank pulley was changed but the old one was fine.
We had it for about 40k, was a good little car that got a consistent 55-65MPG for the journeys it did and with the remap was pokey enough for its size.

Not too bothered about the poke, it's the economy and maintenance costs
So lots as it pulls more than a 1.1i saxo or the 1.5d i dont care!
Bodywork options anyone? 4 x 108 stud placement i know that, torsion bar is already known, what about front/rear bumpers, even arches?

Ive had mine for since october 17th 2013.
According to my mobile app i have averaged around 56mpg. Best was 60.57mpg. I have done 7000 miles since owning the car with around 5000 of these miles motorways. The app also figured out how much it has cost me per mile. It is a whopping 0.11p per mile. Now that is bargain motoring. I brought the car on 99xxx miles and now i am currently on 107xxx miles so it has gone over the 100k mark and is still a pleasure to drive. £30 road tax for the year. The two problems which I have had are that the passenger seat runners had to be replaced £35supplied and fitted, this is due to a clip breaking in the old seat runner mechanism. And I have the dreaded crankshaft pulley noise.  I have been quoted £65 again parts supplied and fitted. All in all great car. economical, and nice and pokey. I am going to remap mine soon and decat the beast! Im not a racer. According to peugeot the cambelts are meant to be changed every 10 years or 120k miles. So I shall get mine done within the month.
Just make sure you think wisely about a 3 door or a 5 door. I wish i had got the 5 door version for practicality however 3 door is alot more sportier. Obviously.
I have air con too.
Not bad for a £1400 car with one years tax and mot.

it comes with electric mirrors and windows mine also has air con...not sure if all hdis have air con. I rarely ever use it, its cold enough as it is. They are cheap to fix as the parts can be obtained from scrappys and other big outlets gsf to and eurocarparts to name a few. Recently from £40 worth of diesel I achieved 297 miles of purely around town driving. Thats driving at peak times with traffic etc. Its a good car, would i replace it? maybe for another 1.4 hdi five door version. otherwise I am happy. Cheap motoring. I would buy another car for weekends and fun probably bmw e36 m3. But the 206 hdi is my workhorse and ill give it all the tlc it needs to carry on.

Bought a 2006 1.4HDi, 77k on clocks, needs 2 new wings and a wishbone, £1295.
Paint looks spot on and looked after, went cheap as it was PX'ed as a cat D...
will let ya know more when i do! gotta pick the f****r up from kent (based in south yorkshire)

Pictures please!!! Thats a little expensive considering the work which is involved to bring it up to date.but on the plus side welcome to cheap motoring, where after each fill up you want to achieve more mpg then the last. I have averaged 54mp in my ownership of 5 months but thats with a mix of motorway and local driving.
Give her a full service and everything she needs, no expense spared so far on my eco beast.

I dunno, most 02 plates with that low mileage are still just over a grand.. i've been looking just over a month 2 wings are gonna be £60 max, wishbone £20, and all the work will be carried out by myself coming from a family of mechanics, so all in all i reckon it'll be around £1500 to get her perfectly road worthy.
Yerh, that is the plan! planning a euro roadtrip with my friend in his Bora, up to 'dam, then 660 miles through Germany, Strasbourg, then Aosta, glad it has air con 
Looking to lower her 35mm all round and get some 7.5j Lenzo BSX's as she looks pretty sweet!
