Hi,

I am new to this forum and i am after some help please.

I have read through other cooling fan posts, but i am probably being thick in not understanding something.

We have owned this car approximately 5 months or so, mot time is here and i am doing lots of work to put it correct, 1 thing i have never heard cut in is my fan.

I have aircon(does not work, not worried at the moment) and i saw a few people saying the easiest way to test is to remove the coolant sensor to bring on the fans, i did this(with ignition off) and hey presto the fans came on an stayed on. So my question is, does this mean all is ok as they are working correctly? or do i need to investigate further? i must also add that i have not specifically run the car up to see if they come on, just that they dont come on in normal day to day use, never heard them once.

I fitted a new stat and bled the system out correctly, new coolant etc, car runs fine, does not go above 90 on the dial and never has got hot so to speak, never had the problem others seem to encounter with the "STOP" message displaying and never entering what i would call hot.

2003 - 1 owner and me from new 91k new cambelt kit, clutch, droplinks, 2 new driveshafts, 1 damaged n/s bottom ball joint and arm replaced. just bought a refurb com 2000 for it also.

no harm in running the car upto temp to make sure that the fans come on! i would suggest something like 15 minutes to make sure. Very Happy

Morning, when you unplug the coolant temperature sensor it has infinate resistance. The car sees this as a stupidly high temperature thus turning the fan on.
So unplugging it means it should function if needed when the car gets too hot.

I tested mine and i think the official temperature it comes on at low speed is 94 (might be wrong on that) and high speed is 98. I found mine went slightly higher before turning on looking at the temperature guage in the car anyway.

Give it a go, wont hurt. Just make sure it doesn't go to high should something go wrong.

Ps. My 1.1L took a good 15/20mins to come on, even with the bonnet shut etc.

Life would be easier with universal jointed arms and fingers sometimes

UPDATE :- I am actually amazed, the fans are working correctly, i actually did run it up this afternoon and allowed it to get hot, the fans cut in at just under 95, so that would fit in with what Richard said. I am really surprised, i was preparing to remove the bumper and so on and so forth.

Something actually works!.

UPDATE 2, Car flew its mot, a couple of small adviseries. tester asked if iut was me that had rebuilt it from the ground up lol. Just pleased it got through the mot.
