Before I go spend £50 on extra roof bars, can I just use the roof rails (and a lot of bungee cords) to hold some camping stuff on my roof? Tent, maybe a suitcase or two... Am concerned about them sliding off the back...

why not find a couple metal poles, then 4 exhaust 'U' clamps and bolt that across the roof rails. bit of a lash up but would be cheap and would help secure stuff.
