My 2002 1.1 seems to be making a soft knocking noise. I'd call it an induction knock but could be top end. Seems to be coming from the large box shaped part of the inlet manifold. Any ideas what this might be. Just changed the engine oil and it made no difference. Runs fine. Exhaust is all tight.
Any ideas ?

Believe your referring to the cat. Have you made sure it's secure and is not rattling about causing the knock.
Just to confirm this is only happening when driving and/or idling?

The bit just below the number 1 or the bit under number 7?

these components are the same for the 1.1 and the 1.4
1; Idle air control valve (wrongly named stepper motor) this controls the amount of air that by-passes the throttle butterfly so controlling the idle speed
2; TPS throttle position switch used for reference by the engine ECU
3; Inertia switch , In the event of an accident this cuts the main feed to the fuel pump later models don't have this as it has been incorporated into the BM34 unit.
4; Down stream oxygen sensor connecter follow the lead down to the sensor. Used by the engine ECU to check the condition of the cat. There is a recall for a problem with this sensor availed for earlier models.
5; Thermostat housing , If your car is running cold or boiling up try changing this first
6; The oil filter you will need a 27mm socket to get if off and when you do it does get a bit messy. Top tip here is to undo it all the way and pull the housing up by a couple of mm just enough for the oil to drain back ,it helps most of the time but they are still messy.
7; Up stream oxygen sensor this is the primary sensor used to adjust the air to fuel ratio
8; Power steering pipes the one with the black flexi pipe is the high pressure feed pipe and the alloy one is the return or low pressure pipe
9; This is just a support for the main ECU wiring loom
10; This is the coil pack (old type L3) These things cause so many problems you wouldn't believe from cutting out to non-starts and bad running. If you have any running faults and have this style of coil pack fitted then it is a good place to start together with Bosch plugs.
11; MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure sensor) this is used in place of an air flow meter. By measuring the vacuum in the inlet manifold it can determined how much fuel to put in. On this model the MAP sensor also contains the intake air temperature sensor.
12; The only engine temperature sensor ,This send a signal to the engine ECU which in turn sends a signal to the temp gauge air con ECU , fan control relays etc... |

Thanks guys, you can here it best at tick over. So rules out gearbox etc. It seems to be coming from the bit just under the No1. Maybe a noisy injector although it's not really a "tick" sound almost a pop sound. I'd guess on 1 cylinder not all 4. Exhaust and Cat defo all tight.

Right, fixed it !! Had a look in the box between the throttle butterfly valve and inlet manifold....nothing bad there. Pulled and pushed on a few things but nothing. Then pulled the coil pack back towards the valve cover and the noise got much worse !! Ah ha ! loose spark plug !! sorted.
Not guilty of not tightening it up properly, I guess the last garage service didn't tighten the one plug up.
Thanks for all your comments.

Number 4 plug (the one closest to the timing belt, it's French)?
If it was, it wouldn't be the first one I've heard off being loose.

Actually number 3 plug 2nd one away from timing belt. It's my sons car and the first french car I have worked on. Few weird bits but the 1.1 does seem a really nice engine torquey and revvy.

That's the stone age mid 1980's design for you.
8 valve petrol TU engines are basically bulletproof, it's old mechanical technology with a modern fuel injection & ignition system grafted on.
