Hi
I have an issue with the rear axle on my Gti 138 from 2000
3 months ago i took the torsion bars out to adjust the hight, they were really stuck, so i ended up with the right hand trailing arm with the torsion bar in it on the floor hitting the one end of the torsion bar with a very big hammer. Finally Got it free, assambled everything again with new bearings.
Two months ago i had the car on a track, my brakes Where gone after so i put the car on axle stands and noticed that the 8mm bolt keeping the ARB in place where missing on the ledt side off the car, replaced with a new used locktite, making sure it wouldnt go again.
Saturday went to another trackday, after 40 minutes of driving on the cooldown trip i noticed a Cling sound from the ledt rear everytime i took a leftturn.
We jacked the car right rear, and the wheel stayed on the ground
I suspected the splines on the torsion bar or on the rear axle to be destroyed more or less.
I have the rear axle off the car now and the torsion bars are out, and i cant see any wear on the splines?
But when i try to refit the torsionbar its a tight fit on axle, i cant push it in with my hands, but on the trailing arm i can is this right?
Could it be the ARB? The left side arm is still stuck on the ARB?

Did you replace the bearing on both side?
As far as i remember, torsion bar is already tight fit. I normally use a small hammer to knock it in.

Yes both sides and with Genuie parts from Peugeot
If i recall it right it used to be a tight fit, i will try the other side and see if that is a tight fit

Did you put copper grease on the torsion bar splines? You did rotate the bars to find the position that they will slip into both axle and trailing arms?

I used some ceramic grease on the splines?
Yes turned the bar until it would slip in to both axle and trailing arm, i Think i Got it in 5-6mm and then i had to use some force to get it all the Way in.

Yes i cleaned the torsion bars for 3-4mm of corrosion protection, ended up with two almost new looking bars in dark red with yellow ribbons.
And i used a small screwdriver to remove dirt and rust from the splines on both the bars and axle
