Low manifold pressure - cause of spluttering/hesitation?

Hey All,

I've had a problem with my 1.4 206 (05 plate) petrol for a while now with spluttering on engine start until you give it some bursts of the accelerator pedal, but more dangerously it hesitates when pulling away. It doesn't do it all the time and seems to decide on which days it will do it...

I've plugged in Peugeot planet which returned no codes but when going through the options I noticed that one of the readings 'manifold pressure' was lower than what it says it should be...

Reading when idle was 296 mbar
It says it should be 350 390 mbar when idling

Would this have something to do with the problem and also poor fuel economy?

I have cleaned the throttle body which made a slight improvement for a day or two... but then again who knows, it may have just been wishful thinking! It has had a new coil pack as the previous one died once day, but the problem remains after this was changed.

I would, however, suggest also trying to look at the live data for the Oxygen sensors, as these can cause lean running and give the same symptoms.

If you can record the live data (if PP doesn't support this, plenty of free versions do) then you can hopefully identify the conditions at the point of the misfire/splutter.

Alternatively, disconnect each potentially faulty sensor and go for a test drive - that's the trampy way of singling out the fault.

you might have a crack in the manifold,on Cylinder 4 (driver side),as this is a common fault in 1.4 engine as far as I know,remove the hot shield and check it.

Hey guys,

Thanks for your responses, thought I'd follow up as I know how annoying it is when people don't!

Basically I've had a man in the know look at this and 2 problems identified.

1) 'pinking' related behaviour and noises, resolved by replacing MAF /MAP sensor
2) after the above resolved, still had a dead spot between 2 - 3k revs, throttle body has been replaced as there's something wrong with the stepper motor which couldnt be sourced on its own.

I'll be getting the car back Thursday all being well Smile
