Yes, its the season of noises down in camp 206.
After a trusted Peugeot dealer in Carmarthen changed my cam belt (and rang to suggest that the alternator belt would also be changed due to wear), I had some belt squeel during a cold start.
The squeeling wouldnt appear until after 30 seconds and would gradually fade when the engine was getting to operating temperature.
After sending the car back to the dealer, they reported that it was JUST over the year since the work was done so the car wont fall under warranty, (what are the chances eh!?) but they would investigate for free.
After days of them complaining that they couldn't re-create the fault, they finally caught it one morning.
But they commented that after spraying on some belt dressing (whatever that is), on the running alternator belt, the noise went.
I ordered a new alternator belt and changed it. But the squeel remains.
Before I get busy and change the tension pulley and idle pulley, I might try a cold start without the alternator belt to see if its not the cam belt.
Anyone had similar problems!? Anyone know of idle/tension pulley prices on a '03 GiT!?

I had so much alternator belt squeal on my old 1.9d lx I got used to it and ignored it, its just one of those annoying things I think, if youve got a new belt and your battery is charging, turn your stereo up!

mine did this in the morning, i think it was the rain to blame, but yh good idea defo try the cold start without the alt belt on and see what happen because i know when i checked on mine the tensioner was like £50 odd pound

Rain, shine, damp or dew, this baby squeaks.
Only on hot starts or during humid weather, it wont squeak.
Its making me think that it maybe the coolant pump as its strange when the squeaking goes away when the engine gets warmer.
Either that, just dress up the pulley faces to be really rough and stop smooth to smooth surface squeeling.

yh, tbh take the alt belt off and see what happens and then you will know for sure what your dealing with.
did you replace the belt with a genuine/good quality belt as i know the cheap ones can start to make a little noise after a while

spray some wd40 on tensioner if it stops and comes back few days later (as wd40 just drys out) its probably that,
will more than likely be that anyway, if not maybe alternator or powersteering pump? but what raj said will determine that if its one of them,

What a bunch of lying Peugeot &%$#?!>
I knew that the good old belt dressing spray was too good to be true.
Took off the alternator belt today and ran the car. NOISE WAS STILL THERE!
Rang Carmarthen Put to vent my anger after they changed the cam belt not even 18 months ago when the problem arose but they've washed their hands of any free will gesture.
The problem is clearly the water pump or a pulley but they're charging me not far off the price of a cam belt swap (its all labour) but gonna give me a discount on parts.
Cars booked in for thursday, will report back on what they lied with this time.

Isn't it advisable to change water pump and tensioners at same time as a cam belt to avoid the repeat labour charges if the new belt knackers them? If you didn't ask for the full kit, then they would only do the belt, hence problems you've got now!

They said that they fitted a 'cambelt kit', which, after enquiring today, is posh speak for a belt and a new tensioner.
Be warned.

I haven't got anything to complain about Seabrook.
Its all over 12 months old, so I haven't got a leg to stand on.Even if it is one of the pulleys.
Fantastic paying another £250+ in labour for them to investigate this squeel.

Update:
Peugeot had the car back to witness the squeak after proving they lied to me about the alternator belt.
Although hearing it from cold, and removing the cam belt, they 'found no fault with anything they fitted previous or anything associated with the cam belt, even the water pump did have wear but felt normal' - Peugeot techs.
After discussing the way forward and saying that any squeaks after this work withina year and theyre having it back to fix it for free, they quickly got worried and changed everything, including the water pump and the cam belt AGAIN! But severly reduced the whole cost of labour and parts. Still touching £350 all in mind.
After asking them to also recharge the aircon (with it working sort of cold but not recharged for years), its obvious that they had a green light win back all the money they lost. They reported a leaking aircon pipe - despite a perfectly working system for 4 years (they claimed the aircon gas escaping was affecting work on the cambelt) and quoted a new pipe, fit and recharge £155.
What a mystery eh!?

Talk about a long overdue update.
This was still going on, but instead of paying Peugeot again, and with a recent upgrade to my man cave, I took a few days off and replaced EVERYTHING, again. Water pump, tensioners and even idlers and belt.
I removed the alternator belt and the squeal was STILL there. So I knew it was cam belt related. Bought everything I could and got to it.
But it was during re-assembly that I FINALLY think I found the problem. And its one that a lot of people could get caught out on.
The lower cam belt cover wasn't fitting right. Bolts weren't lining up exactly and although I managed to get them all fitted, this really bugged me so I took it back off to re-examine. A particular M6 bolt located RIGHT next to the crankshaft was going in PAST the cover and wasn't clamping it down at all. The reason why this hole in the cover was so big that the bolt and washer could pass through it, puzzled me.
But it was when I reattached the crankshaft pulley for the alternator belt, that something caught my eye.
It seems that the crankshaft pulley has been RUBBING on the lowercambelt cover and making the noise.
The photo below shows the score marks.
The bolt shown in the photo is also the one at fault. The reason why it wasn't fitting right and the reason for the big hole in the cam belt cover is because this bolt is the ONLY bolt on the whole cover that has some sort of collar it has to locate OVER for the cover to fit flat and flush. It seems that when Peugeot changed the cam belt back in 2010, they didn't quite locate this collar right, so the cover was sitting proud and rubbing ON the pulley.
The below photo shows the clearance with the cam cover fitted properly. its 2-3mm AT BEST.
I'm not 100% certain its this but i'm 99%.
Its something everyone needs to watch out when doing cam belt changes. That lower cover is a nightmare to locate, especially when there are bolt collars to locate on the cover.
