Hi guys, been busy on the 206 today along with sorting a few issues...
Ive been hearing a knocking noise which appears to be coming from the rear drivers side wheel.
Ive also noticed that even with the handbrake firm on, the wheel can be grabbed ( while on floor) and can be twisted. As if loose, tonight i have just noticed the top of the drivers side rear wheel has negative camber. Where the passenger side appears fine.
Now i think i know why a 206 1.4hdi has been fitted with wheel spacers at the rear and aftermarket ripspeed alloys fitted.
Any ideas what this could be, had a look underneath but nothing majorly obvious. When i have chance i will jack the wheel up and see if anything is obviously wrong.
Any thoughts ?
Thanks
Rob

Check wheel nuts first,
then jack it up, spin the wheel and listen for noises and check that it is free, then check the wheel bearing by grabbing the wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock and wiggle it to check for play, and then finally try grabbing the wheel and try to move the trailing arm in a few different positions (in, out, try pushing and pulling and twisting by holding the wheel at 11 and 5 o'clock), if the trailing arm moves in and out then it's likely to be the axle.
A worn rear axle in my experience drives ok but gives a thumping knock at low speed, and then at 45-70mph it vibrates badly and causes the car to shake and shudder / feel unstable.

Okay thanks for your reply, i will check how you have said when i next have chance. I did wonder about the trailing arm bushes and have seen these are fairly cheap to buy. I fear my axle may have had though i think the rear wheels and spacers has helped disgise it somewhat. It feels as though the back end is a few seconds behind the frony and with standard ride height it feels like it floats round the corners. Doesnt inspire much confidence at all lol.
If it is the rear axle thats dead, ive seen on imaxles website they can be bought for 200 quid. But is this simply ready be bolted on to the car ? And also how much would a garage charge for removal and fitting as i dont have all the tools or space for an axle transplant.
Thanks again
Rob

Annoying no play in wheels . Its seems when the axel extends back upto normal ride hight after a bump .,it goes ting !

Yeah thats what im experiencing, a metal on metal clonk/knocking when going over man hole covers etc. That can be investigated soon anyway. At the minute my clutch i think is on its last legs.
Thanks

Right o...
me and my bro have been out and have had a good play around. Heres was have found.
1) drivers side rear wheel wobbles, 9-3 and twisting shows movement in the radius arm bearing/seal opening up to a visible gap between the arm and axle tube.
2) sitting in the boot with the handbrake off and bouncing up and down ( trying to replicate speed hunps as such) showed the wheel above to be moving closer to the inner arch under pressure. I.e negative camber.
3) checking the bushes where the front mounting point is located ( the mounting point that is nearer the fuel tank. ) has a clear gap between what appears to be a big washer and the mounting arm piece where rubber can be simply pulled off in chunks.
Passenger side rear wheel, roughly a 5mm gap between the radius arm and the axle tube ( under the vehicles own weight without habdbrake applied.) Jacking up on this side reveleaed the gap to open up nearer 7mm! Could nearly fit my little finger in it!. Not masses of movement however.
Again the mounting point nearest the front of the car was perished and dropping to bit with rubber hanging out.
At present we suspect the drivers side rear radius arm bearing/seal has perished and collapsed giving loads of movement and because of this slop when cornering etc there is added pressure put being put on the passenger side rear radius arm hence the gap opening up.
So...
1) is there a guide to removing the rear axle/beam.
2) best place to buy a recon ?
3) are the replscement recon's really ready to fit?
I have drums on the back not sure if i have abs or not.. but assuming you would swap shock absorbers and drum brake parts over and reconnect handbrake cables and brake pipe? ( not sure where id disconnect. And fit new wheel bearings. Swap the above from old axle to the new one and then bolt into the body. Or would i need mounting bushes etc ?
Sorry for the million questions, only just bought the car 3 days ago and finding a few faults already abd havent done a beam before..
Thanks
Rob

Hi rob.
I am not sure if there is a thread or guide to remove the axel .
Its only 4 female hex bolts to undo to remove it .
Remove back box .
Loosen or remove the bolts for calipers
Unclip/bolt brake lines then remove calipers get brake lines out the way( or drum assembly ) & unbolt the axel . Ive used a 12mm socket & smashed it with a hammer. Works well .
item I found on eBay: pages.ebay.com/link/?n...30&alt=web
This company supply on a exchange basis .^^^

Thanks project
That does sound pretty darn easy to do in fairness and im liking the link you posted! says in the ad i dont have to exchange my old unit too which makes things easier. ( also allows me in any spare time to strip and attempt to refurb my original axle myself. So hopefully have a spare for future :). ( im hoping anyway).
Im thinking if i can, to drop the axle and while its all out of the way of
Wiring brushing the boot floor and waxoyling while the back end is outta the way.
Then on re-fitting im thinking of new shock absorbers and wheel bearings and hand brake cables. Depends on funds at the time but would make most sense and to also replace the exhaust as i fear disturbing joints etc would turn it into scrap.
Thanks
Rob
