hi all...
got another problem after a week of being okay.
today while out on the motorway visiting and doing general running about. I was nearly shunted up the back because suddenly the engine went to idle at 60mph! dipped the clutch threw it into 4th and floored it. all seemed okay at this point.
being a diesel and only doing a combined run i.e dual carriageway speed and round town stuff over this past week thought it could be choked up so left in 4th at between 55mph and to 70mph for approx 2-3 miles to hopefully clear any crap out.
nope.... its become gradually worse in the last 50 miles or so, driving along at any speed etc, suddenly loss of power engine revs drop to idle and effectively im engine braking. dip the clutch either change gear or dip the clutch and off it is again fine. ive tried pumping the throttle when its done it,stamped on the throttle and no nothing. dead. then suddenly comes back when it wants to.
it shows no faults of any kind on the dash no eml, no other fault warnings or anything.
there's no crunching of gears, no stiffness in changing gears, clutch biting point is fine and is nice a light and smooth too. so no problem there just to check the clutch even though it had been done approx 6 weeks ago. 5th gear at 20mph the car jerks around so the clutch is fine anyway. does slip or anything either.
no turbo faults either as that can be clearly heard whistling when having to accelerate hard to get away from fast approaching traffic when the thing plays up.
took my brother out earlier and we both came to the same conclusion that is almost like a throttle position sensor problem, momenterily the ecu isn't getting a message from the throttle position sensor say where my foot is etc so returns to default (idle position) then dipping the clutch and bringing to the bite again suddenly it gets the message and drives fine again.)
it does sometimes "try" to play up which can be felt as a sudden jolt (if it was a petrol car you would say it felt like a bad missfire intermittent though).
any ideas what it could be.... this car is begining to get right on my wires.... 800 quid in parts (doing all the work myself) and now this... can this thing last more than a week without trying to kill me!!!

Hi Rob, I know the feeling, spent about the same on mine over the last 12 months, took it for mot last week and it failed on the airbag light coming on during the test.
that was the last straw so to speak, not spending anymore hard earned on it.
I dont think i've ever owned a car more unreliable and believe me I've had more than a few.
Don't know why but I never had as many problems with any of the 205, 309 or 405's I've owned over the years, even the MG ZR I had before the 206.
I wont be buying another.
hope you find a cure for the car, but sometimes it's better for your sanity just to cut your losses.

Thanks for the replies guys,
Its just an utter nightmare weve had the car less than 2 months and so far its had a clutch, rear axle, rear brakes and rear brake pipes, compensator a new drivers seat and an eml light and failing to start as the starter motor had jammed. random cutting out. All sorted above and had just over a weeks running without a fault and now suddenly loses all power on motorway and nearly end up rear ended by a truck! Im 22 and been driving 4 years and had some real relics! Never had so many problems with a car.
my first proper car when i passed my test was a 1979 triumph dolomite 1300 33 years old and was driven daily had the ocassion problem but covered over 8k miles without having to do anymore than resetting the points and a service. That car is still on the road now!
the car that replaced it was a 24 year old mk2 fiesta 957 pop plus with over 170k miles on its original engine oh.. and rear axle and thats still on the road now too. Ive had other cars like tge 306 cabriolet and infact had two. My bro also has one now. Never had major issues but fixing one job usually resulted in anproblem somewhere not even related i.e fixed radiator and did a 300 mile round trip just for a genuine ordanez radiaror from pug the last one they had a available in the country. Fitted it etc etc and on test drive airbag warning light came on!
So far despite the cars ive owned in recent years this car has had much more time effort and even money spent on it in the past 2 months than the year that i owned the dolomite now thats gotta say something.
Well... i going back to older fords in all fairness, just how the 206 got through quality control is beyond me.
Rear axles that collapse
brake servos and master cylinders that fail as a common fault even more so if used in an emergency stop wtfs that about?
Brake light switch thats all often knocked if you have a passenger in the front that mught happen to have feet! Resulting in brake lights being on constantly
throttle issues like this resulting in sudden loss of throttle sensing without any warning.
Yet jump in a 25 year old fiesta.. ya dont have any of these stupid and potentially life threatening faults! Heard ever heard of a rear axle needing to be replaced on any fiesta lol. Ive owned a fair few.
The 206 isnt having anything else spent on it its crippled us, caused me a job loss already and had nothing but s**t with it. It'll be going.
Thanks for the offer fella but i wouldnt drive it to bristol with the way it is as its a good 3 hours away from west yorkshire and even then i refuse to put so much as a quid into this french Plastic pig.

The trouble is without all the modern electronics and ECU (petrol or dielsel) new(er) cars won't meet the emmissions standards.
So manufacturers get driven to fit complex electronics that are difficult for the average person to diagnose and fix.
One thing that might be worth trying is a fault code read. A reader is £10 on ebay and it isn't spending on this car as it will work on all post 2002 cars so can be used in the future.

I could be the cat/filter: the 1.4 ones collapsed and roll over the exhaust hole in the cat holder. I had this .. any suggestion of a hill and I was being caught and overtaken by artics ...
Smashed it out and it goes like stink now ..
PS I will replace it though ...
