Ok, so I currently have a 'V' plate 140 GTi. Runs fine, everything works but its a bit tatty and its my daily driver (I do about 500 miles a week).
Now, for a bit of a starter project, Im thinking of buying a good condition 3 door shell '52 plate or better (GTi 140 preferably), and getting a 180 engine (as there seem to be a lot of them about lately) and slotting her in.
As the '52 plate will more than likely be plex, I am assuming it will literally be plug and play (obviously with the correct ecu / loom from engine)?
TL/DR: Is it less complicated putting a 180 engine into a plex shell, seeing as the plex wiring is in place; than it is putting a 180 engine into a pre-plex shell, as all the wiring would also have to swap over (ball-ache)?
Yes, I know I can buy a cheap 180 these days, but Im after a project, something to keep me busy and so I can clean it up, powdercoat etc etc instead of taking my daily off the road to do it.
Some figures...
Good condition 140 = £650 (https://www.facebook.com/groups/102661519908854/?fref=nf)
180 engine, looms, etc etc. = £400
Time and effort = couple of weeks for swap and tweaking
Decent 180 = £1500

Get it done, if its a project your after and not just a new gti 180 then it sounds like a good one to me. It should be plug and play with it being plexed.

The 180 has more sensors and a different loom. Much better and cheaper to start with the 180. At the age of these cars there will be lots of things to fix or improve.
