Hello All,

Problem with what I assume is the electrics on my 206. Model 2005.

For more 2 years I have had a problem starting to car on occasion. On turning the key the car tries to start but simply judders. However it would start eventually. Sometimes I had to leave it all day and then it would start again without problem later on. At first I assumed this was a problem with cold weather and the glow sticks. I replaced them but the problem persists. I have also replaced the battery (on the advice of a garage) but again no difference.

The problem then appeared to rectify for the whole winter despite the car being outside all the time…I literally had no problems at all…it started first time every time. However now we have had some hot sunny weather the problem has restarted and has become very frequent. Literally every day now.

I have noticed the battery indicator illuminates on occasion whilst driving and the central locking will sometimes lock and unlock on its own accord. I have also noticed that sometimes when I stop at lights the electrics appear to cut out…by that I mean for example the fan will stop working until I start moving again…the radio however continues to play. I am pretty sure this is all connected to the same underlying issue.

The problem appears to be worse on hot sunny days….strange as that seems. I found a “fix” which was to open the bonnet and bang the engine compartment fuse box after which literally every time the car starts. I have looked at all the fuses but I can’t see a problem.

I am sure the issue is electrical and I am resigned to taking it to an electrician but I thought I would have one more go myself and post the question here.

Any suggestions of what I can check or try ? …..I am not very mechanically minded so please go easy on me. Thanks.

The first port of call when it comes to electrics and the 206 is to check the earth that goes to the gearbox, and it's quite common for that to fail because they come out of the factory very tight.

When was the last battery fitted? If it's the original, it could be the problem.

I replaced one in my Alfa which when it was hot, refused to turn over the engine properly. When it was cold, it tended to start!

It was only about 5 years old (5 year Yuasa) but since a new Bosch S5 battery went in it starts first time, every time.

Down to just the 1.4 HDi. Cayman Green 2.0i CC sold.
