Is it possible to upgrade standard stalk wing mirrors to electric ones? Is it as simple as getting two wing mirrors with wiring and the centre switch and wiring them in?

Essentially, yes. You might already have the extra plug under the window switch and wiring running up to the corner of the window - check.
If not, in addition to running that wiring, you might need to provide new power and ground to the switch as well.
The connector up by the mirrors can be different, so make sure you get mirrors with a plug fitting the harness connectors. Otherwise it's been said here that the pin numbering transfers between the different style plugs (3x3 vs 2x5), so it's fairly simple to change the plugs or make up adapters.

There's a breakers yard near me where you can help yourself and they have loads of Pugs in there, so was thinking of having the set from one of them!

I was more concerned with how the switch is wired in, does it literally just need a power supply?

It takes in +12 and ground and the switch movement then applies those to the wires to the appropriate motor, depending if you move horizontally or vertically. Polarity determining direction of movement on the chosen axis.
Don't recall how the heater element is powered in the case of heated mirrors though. You might want to see if the wiring diagrams in the Howto section covers that.

I wired in electric mirrors into my 1.1 many years ago.
Do recall it being very difficult at all.

swap the looms and fit a switch and mine worked.......until some p***k decided to smash it off the car last night

had an old spare set with different colour plugs.....managed to swap the bass over and get em back working...after an hour an a half of labour, only bought the 180 mirrors a few months back

Hello just picked up a 2001 1.6 16v glx.
Looks like in past both mirrors been replaced.
One was broken too. There is a electric mirror switch in the car but one mirror was manual and one electric which I needed to replace. The mirror I took off had a round connector and a wiring harness clip, the same as the car. But the one I bought off ebay has a different harness adapter and no round connector. Do I need to get another mirror or is it fixable with a harness. Plus what is the round connector for.

The two types of connectors I've heard of have their pins in different arrangements, 2 rows of 5 or 3 rows of 3. Pin assignments are the same though, so the wire ion pin1 on a 3x3 is the same as pin1 on a 2x5, and so on.
Neither is what I'd call round though...

Do you get 12V across pins 8 & 9, switching polarity as you rotate the switch between the forward and rear positions?
