Recently changed my 138hp gti for a 180,84000m , good history,10moth mot.
just giving it a once over and found a huge amount of play in the o/s/f wheel bearing.
didnt have time to fix myself so put it into a reputable garage.after assembly they said there was still some play and took apart again to recheck all was pressed home.
I said I would drive for a bit and recheck.
did about 100miles and found the large amount of play was back.stripped it out myself, and I think there is something wrong with either the flange or cv joint as the cv doesnt clamp up on the inner bearing, it butts up to the radius on the shaft to the large chamfer on the flange shaft first.this leaves a fair gap to the inner race of the inner bearing which then walks out with use and gives me the free play.
Dont know the history with the cv joint, but if a pattern part could it be wrong design?

Well the answer is yes,the CV joints do vary.Bought a new one this morning, tested it by putting some grease on the chamfer and flat flange face and dummy building. The new one clamps the inner bearing race on the flat face where arrowed, the old one on the chamfer which was on the end of the drive flange shaft..
Put it all back together and the bearing feels normal.
Will strip it all back down and replace the bearing as it had been driven for some time with a load of clearance and probably done it no favours.
God knows how it got through an MOT in October! Shocked
getting down the snag list,ABS sensor replaced on the NSF so warning light is now out.
new seal for the oil cooler to engine to do.

Observations from changing from 138 to 180.
Engine runs like a sack of s**t when cold and difficult to drive smoothly.
Suspension /tyres feel super stiff compared to 138.
MPG at moment is about 5mpg worse on the same commute,33mpg compared to 38.Although this may improve now the bearing is sweet.
Liking the additional 40hp.
