Hi there. My car is the 2003 Peugeot 206 1.4l petrol 8v version.

The temperature rises as normal to around 85 degrees. At this point it then climbs to the red rapidly or it falls to 0 degrees then to the red rapidly (split second). When it hits the red, the high speed fan cuts in for a few minutes, if i turn the car of at this point the high speed fan will turn off and the low speed fan will turn on. When the car is in the red coolant temperature, it starts acting slightly wierd (loosing power, idling wierd, it's like the ECU is controlling it but im not 100% sure). I installed a new thermostat a few months ago, i can feel this getting hot so i think this is fine. I have just ordered a new (green) temperature sensor (£6.50) just in case it's that.

So i know the high and low speed fans work, the low speed fan resistor works fine too. Therefore the low and high speed relays must be okay??

I honestly have no idea why it is doing this, anyone have any ideas?

EDIT: I have flushed the entire coolant system out, there are no blockages anywhere, the radiator is free flowing and the thermostat works as it should.

The oil temperature sits at around 88-90 degrees and does not rise which indicates the water is not actually overheating.

See what happens once the temperature sensor is replaced - they are a known weak spot. Might also be worth replacing the expansion bottle pressure cap, there also a known weak spot & a cheap to replace part.

Thanks BSI, iv'e checked the coolant expansion bottle, it holds pressure fine. Ill update the thread when I install the sensor.

THREAD UPDATE The temperature sensor was fitted which rectified the problem. A side note to anyone else with a similar problem, if you found that the problem gets worse over time it is more than likely the temperature sensor malfunctioning.
