So.. I'm looking to buy a 206 next week.. a 1.4 hdi..

Hoping to get one that's had the cambelt and water pump done..

But... Am I setting myself up for a whole world of fixing one thing after another or is the 206 fundamentally sound with a few niggles?

Reason for taking this path is to save some dollar on motoring having just sold my 9-5 Saab, don't really want another never ending project.

A 2.0 HDI powered 206 would be a better choice for a diesel.

Nope.

The 2.0 HDI has pretty much proven its bullet proof.

Nope.

The 2.0 HDI has pretty much proven its bullet proof.

We do a lot of short trips.. seen a number of larger turbo engines suffer due to this. Is the 2.0 ok as, pretty much, a shopping car?

The 2.0 HDI used in the 206 is as basic as a common rail diesel engine gets.

No dual mass flywheel & no DPF filter.

The 1.4 HDI also has neither of those BUT there prone to injector seal faults & the gearbox is weak.

A choice between the two, id take the 2.0 HDI everytime.

Doing a lot of short trips, I'd have a look for a 1.4 petrol 16 valve - head gasket is a known weak spot.

If you do lots of short trips why not just buy something with a petrol engine?

Saxo electric PAS pump, Vibra Technics engine mounts. Samco coolant hoses, TTV steel flywheel, 4.76 final drive ratio, 307 CC 180 ratios. 2019 BMW 530i. 2017 Mercedes C300 convertible.

There's a few 40-ish mile trips a month and a couple of 500 mile trips a year..

65mpg is hard to argue with...

I want an economical little workhorse...

You won't get 65mpg out of either diesel if it's just doing short trips trundling about.

The 1.4 petrol 16 valve is a sweet engine that suits the 206 & can crack 40+ mpg easily on a run & around 40mpg average in trundle mode.

Check for head gasket failure, electronic throttle body can fail & make sure the software is up to date.

The 2.0 HDI is a good engine but it's not really meant for short trips just trundling about.

I had a 1.4 HDi courtesy car for a few weeks once and it did 60mpg but that wasn't doing stop start driving.
