Had my Peugeot 206 mot'd today and it failed on 'anti-lock breaking system warning lamp indicates an ABS fault'
The company have said I may be able to buy a second hand abs pump from scrap yard and they will bleed my breaks, but they said it depends whether I can put a second hand one in or not.
Does anyone know whether I can?
Thanks

Did they read the codes to conclude the pump was at fault?
The ABS lamp coming on can be caused by other things: cracked reluctor rings, faulty sensors (reading the rings), wiring faults to the sensors etc...

Yes if the numbers all match up & you can find a working one.

OR do as im doing this weekend & just fit a service / exchange unit.

FWIW the ATE mk 70 ABS unit fitted to the later 206 ( & a lot of other makes of cars ) is apparently problematic when is ages.

Be warned - I have known people replace the ABS unit & its not cured the fault as the real fault was with the wiring loom - make sure the garage diagnosis the fault properly & not just gone by the fault codes.

FWIW - just fitted a service / exchange ABS unit to my 206, new fluid & bleed the brake system = fault cured.

Erased all the fault codes with Peugeot Planet & happy days

What was the fault code planet was bringing up?

I had an issue last year with mine, pump being permanently locked. ABS light permanently on and the prognosis from some online research was the pump was as good as dead and time for a new one. Took a bar and a big hammer to the top of the pump and gave it a fair few good taps, and it's been as good as new ever since.

Id already tried the twating it with a hammer approach & then cleaning all the electrical connectors & earths.

Apparently the ATE mk 70 ABS unit suffers from known issues that require more then a hammer to fix Laughing

That's the exact issue mine had. And I also have the mk70 unit.

All the hits online I was reading was giving me horror stories of a new pump being needed. I'm sure you can imagine the sense of relief my wallet had when a few clouts with a 4lb lump hammer fixed it Laughing

That's how mine started off, but I was able to clear the code in planet. But eventually it got to the point of the code always being there and would return instantly when cleared, then I had the ABS light on permanently.

Providing the part is like for like you should be able to fit a new pump. I would suggest new or and exchanged unit rather than second hand. Brakes are something never work compromising on with second hand parts
