Greetings everyone. I've searched through 20 pages but couldn't really find any problem that resembles mine completely. I recently bought a Peugeot 206, year 1999 with the 1.4 L 55kW engine (petrol). Non-plexed. Everything has been working great until a few days ago when my speedometer started to malfunction.

Description: The speedometer works fine when accelerating but when I start to brake the speedometer wont go down (only happens if I'm driving over 60 km/h) even though the car is actually slowing down, it simply stays on the same speed and the pointer starts to bounce a little and then it stays on the speed that I am no longer driving in. This really becomes a problem because when I start to accelerate again it will start of from where it got stuck! So for instance, if the speedometer got stuck at 90 km/h it will start to move from that point when accelerating, it ends up looking like I'm driving at 180 km/h even though I'm probably driving around 90 km/h. However, the odometer works perfect, it measures the correct distance traveled.

The only possible way for me to get the speedometer back to 0 km/h is to turn the engine off then switch the power on and off about 6-8 times, I must do this because the speedometer jumps back approximately 5-10 km/h each time i turn the power off...

Could it simply be the wiring in the back of the instrument cluster? Since the odometer is working fine I don't suspect the speed sensor on the back of the gearbox to be the issue. Fuses have been checked. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Location: What's it to you? ? ?

It will be either the drive unit on the back of the speedo - the plastic cogs strip OR the pointer has come unstuck from the shaft.
