Went to move the 180 yesterday and it completely failed to start.Have had it before when it didn't start at 1st attempt but would always go 2nd time.
Engine spun over and it did partially start then coughed and continued to spin over but sounded different like it had no compression.I thought the belt had snapped but removed one of the cam covers and the cam still turned ok..Battery started to sound a bit flat so took it off and charged overnight.
Before attempting a restart this morning, checked the earth lead,a number of the strands on both cables were broken so unsoldered it and made good the battery to gearbox cable and fitted a new earth to the chassis.Cleaned the coil pack and vvt solenoid plugs with electrical cleaner.
Removed the coil pack and found 2 of the plug wells full of oil.Removed all the plugs and cleaned oil off.Plug electrodes themselves looked fine.Spun engine over to disperse any oil.Cleaned oil off coil pack.refitted plugs and coil.
Removed vvt solenoid and cleaned out all the oil.
Refitted battery following normal procedure.
Attempted a start but still sounded odd and didn't start.
Read the fault codes and it said coil pack primary failure PO351 I think.
Attempted another start and it began to fire so kept cranking and it eventually started.
Have then run it around this afternoon and it ran fine and performed normally.
No faults codes came back.
It has had a new crank, cam and coolant temp sensor in the last year.
Plugs which are Denso before anyone shouts NGK.These have been in for about 8000miles.
Throttle body has been cleaned in last 6 months.
Battery is less than 18months old.
It was snowing here yesterday and below freezing, but had used it the day before without issue.
Fuel tank was low but more than enough to run.
I'm inclined to replace the coolant sensor again, was going to fit a genuine one but at £43 maybe get a pattern?Any pattern makes recommended?
Also replace the cam cover gaskets to stop oil leak.
Coil pack is Sagem so probably should replace it despite it running ok once it did start.
