Hi, Ive just got a 2001 Peugeot 206 CC 2.0 petrol with the ew10j4 engine.

Car had been laid up since Christmas and when it was jump started had a misfire that soon cleared itself.

Over a few short drives all was fine then on Sunday I did about a 15 mile drive then left the car for about 30 mins. When I came back to the car it started fine then started misfiring very bad under load then completely cut out. I tried to restart it to no avail so disconnected the battery for ten minutes then it fired up again. 5 minutes later same issue again so just to be able to get home I did the same again and the car then drove fine all the way home. upon further investigation I noticed there had been a bodge repair to the coil pack multi plug so I decided to rectify this and tidy it up.

Next morning I started the car for it to run around 30 seconds then cut out several times then no start whatsoever. Thinking it is most likely a damaged coil pack due to the wiring issue I plugged in my elm code reader and torque threw out p0335 crankshaft position sensor a circuit. I have replaced the crank sensor with a brand new one and cleared the code but still the car fails to start.

After a few attempts at starting I plugged in the code reader again and the same p0335 code appeared along with a generic p3500 powertrain code came up.

I have spent today checking wiring from the ecu to the crank sensor and coil pack and all is good but still no start. what I have noticed this evening is that the 2 signal wires to the coil only stay at 12volts for about 5 to 10 seconds after turning the key to the run or start positions then it just drops to zero volts which suggests to me there is something like a relay kicking out when under load. This also happens on the power feed to the coil pack when I check continuity to the engine bay fuse box when the battery is diconnected. The continuity dropping off after approx 10 seconds.

This car has the brown 15 pin double relay under the ecu and what I was wondering is if this relay unit has some sort of timer inside? Does this relay unit control the coil or as I am sometimes reading only the fueling side of the engine management. I seem to be getting fuel pressure at the rail so I think the pump is operating it just seems to be ignition side that's the issue. I get the beeping when the key is in the ignition with the drivers door open so I presume the imobiliser is all operating ok and I am of the understanding that the imobiliser cuts circuits upon key turn not after a few seconds so would not think that this is the issue in this case but I could be mistaken.

Any advice would be appreciated on this as I am running out of things to try now. Is there a test procedure for the brown double relay or does the imobiliser have a delay after key turn? I only have the one key and no code card.

Many thanks,

Nige

These brown double relays are a known weak point on these early 206s.

does this sound d like an issue the relay failing would cause?

Well just found a schematic for the brown relay and it all tests out OK so it's not that. Does an early 206 still have a bsi to reset?
