Hi Everyone,

My first post here and hoping someone can give some advice...
I got my GTI 180 in January this year (wanted something for work but also something that was fun to drive) and was pleased with how nippy it was.
About a month after getting it I had the cam belt replaced by a mechanic I trust (noticed old one was slack and had oil on it) and also replaced the water pump at same time.

I had no probs so far apart from needing some new front wishbones aswell.
Then last month I started noticing a swirling sound coming from engine which went when I put my foot down on clutch, went back to same mechanic who said it was the clutch bearings and I would need new clutch kit.
Unfortunately he was going away for 3 weeks and couldn't do it, so I asked my neighbour who is a ex-mechanic and works from home (he has done work on some of my other cars in past and always done a good job)

I sourced the clutch and he replaced it for me (only issue he had was something to do with front driveshaft which he needed to take off to get to clutch and then showed me it was slightly bent and straightened it.)
Now that was a month ago and the car is running fine EXCEPT it seems to have lost power, it doesn't seem to go as fast when I drop a gear and put my foot down, before if I was coming out of a turning and onto a straight road I could pop it into 1st and it would fly before putting it into 2nd gear and the car would pull really well (you know when you get that silly grin on your face kinda speed) but now going into 1st and then 2nd doesn't seem to make the car pull as fast, as if its lost pull.

I can only put this down to the new clutch? its not slipping because the car isn't revving really high without hardly any pull, there's pull there just not as fast.
Has anyone got any ideas?
One thing I will say is that due to pennies at the time and needing the clutch sorting asap as I needed car for work, I did get a cheap eBay clutch but I won't have thought this would affect the pull of car just how long clutch will last.

Sorry for the long explanation.
p.s. one thing I didn't mention is that now and again for last couple of months I started getting a smell of petrol in car but this was happening before I had clutch done.

If the clutch was the cause of the problem is would be slipping...

Any ideas where to start looking? I read a few things about people with a similar problem that was being caused by the MAF sensor but I can't seem to find one on the GTI.

You would be best starting with reading any error codes stored on the ECU .. that may pin point where to start rather than just swapping out parts .. You might find an EOBD compatible code reader will work but most of us use PP2000 which is the Peugeot diagnostics. You might have someone nearby that could read yours for a small fee .. search the forum for more info
