I have just bought a cheap 1999 206 S16 as a cheap, fun runabout. I noticed that the outside temperature reading on the MFD says --- Looking at my passenger side mirror I don't see any evidence of a sensor. Is there any way of telling if the car should have one? It seems odd that the MFD thinks it should have...
If it isn't there, can it be retro-fitted? This is a pre-multiplex car

Sensor lives in the bottom of the left hand mirror - maybe someone has replaced a mirror in the past.
S16 is a GTI in all but badge.
Connect the replacement sensor to the correct 2 wires at the connector plug behind the triangle trim panel & the outside temp display should work.
Left mirror wiring you should find:
3 x wires for up / down & left / right movement.
2 x wires for heated glass.
2 x wires for outside temp sensor.
Optional 2 x wires if the car is equipped for electric folding mirrors.
