Right chaps, when doing the cam belt is it just a case of taking the mount and ECU out then locking up then locking the crank on the fly wheel, does the camshaft have a lock? or is it just a case of using some tipex?
on the clutch can i just undo all the bolts holding the box to engine and take the shafts and gear box mounts off and hoik the boxe to one side to access the clutch
Sam.

I am not really helpful regarding your post but some advice...
Do you have a Haynes manual?
If you need to ask what to do then I wouldn't do it on a daily driver ...

I have to agree do not fouch the cambelt if you are not totally sure what you are doing because if you naff this up then say bye bye to your engine

I just got main dealer peugoet to do a cambelt on my Gti for 239.99 :D
I would have done it myself but the parts are 105quid and for that price i just couldn't be asked.

Seem as good as any for that sort of thing it either works or it doesn't, 12 month parts and labour warranty and i got them to place all the old bits in the boot so i could inspect them.
Tentionner was fooked.

If you have the money fair enough, just that you could have easily got the job done decently at a well respected garage or something for £100 less.

really?
I just can't see how. Most independants round here wanted between 350 and 450quid. Gti is very tight and most decide to remove both mounts. Most therefore quote 4.6 hours.
So 100quid less would be 139.99. The cheapest cambelt kit is 80quid from GSF carparts. You really think that someone will fit if for less than 60quid? I'm not convinced.

I got quoted 160, had people on here saying 140 is a good price not so while ago - apart from that I have no idea.
Anything over 200 seems overpriced imo

1.1, 1.4, 1.6 cost less to change cambelt.
Gti and 180Gti cost nearly double in price
