Hiya,
Im looking for some info on this car.... Pug forum seems as good as place as any to start, so if anyone could either point me in the right direction on what to look out for when buying or has a good link to common problems, I would be more then greatful for you help
Ive had a quick serch and can only really find stuff about the petrol GTi

They are generally considered good as they give 110bhp. However the FAP causes problems. In my eyes if you are looking at a diesel and want it for the power get a 2.0 and add a panel filter and de-cat then a map. Less problems, similar price.

Expensive to fix when they go wrong, which they seem to.
However, when they're working, I hear they're actually pretty good.

good info but i doubt very much it will be modded, going to be used by the other half for work journeys so looking for good mpg and reasonable realibility
im hearing very mixed reports the DFP is a worry tho..... is the 2.0 lump that much better?

2.0 lump is almost trouble free. just need to remember to change the lower pulley then the car should last forever lol

DONT DO IT!
i work in the trade and have heard some real horror stories about them especially to do with turbos was talking to a guy from a leading turbo company the other day and he absolutely slated them and said they are causing them no end of problems
basically they are fine till approx 40k then they are scrap material :S
im not a big fan of newer diesels in general we have a lot of problems with them at work especially to do with the diesel particulate filters, turbos and wrong oils being used.
in my opinion id stick with a remapped 2.0 hdi as they are the best of the 206 diesels
or use the money you save in repair bills to pay for the extra fuel of a petrol gti

what do you mean by wrong oil being used?
do you mean fake oil or what?

Wrong grade of oil.
Just because someone uses the incorrect oil doesn't mean the car itself is at fault.
The DPF can become blocked over time, but a wee blast with a steam cleaner should sort that
The DMF isn't great but there isn't a diesel now that doesn't have one.

the wrong grade of oil but also lack of regular changing (dont agree as with a lot of people about 2 year servicing change it every 6k on these models). The main problem is sludge build up in the sump/oil pipes
if you have a blown turbo on these models its recommended that you fit all new oil pipes, remove the sump and clean it thoroughly re-fill with fresh oil and filter and run it up for 5 mins change again run it for a couple of hours then change again and finally run it for approx 500 miles then change again with a new filter again. this was recommended at a turbo techinical seminar i attended for work last week
its mainly the technology at fault they are trying to get too much economy/power/low emissions out of modern diesels and they just dont last like an old diesel does
