Hi guys been trying to fix my sisters car for about 3 days now to no avail so i decided to join here and get some advice from people who know what theyre talking about!
im from the other side of the french car list with a renault so im used to weird electrical problems but this one is weird!
started the other day with a Treg 206 1.4 8v engine (TU3JP i understand), my sister was driving down the motorway and going over some not so smooth tarmac (ohh how i love british roads ) the headlights started flickering and would suddenly go off, and the dials (all 4 of them) would drop down to nothing, then all of a sudden it would come back to life and work fine. the car didnt cut out at this point.
so that was that and my old man decided to try and fix it, we spent a couple of hours trying to recreate the fault on the drive and i managed to get the clocks to die on me when i drove quickly down my drive and slammed on the brake, or had the car in reverse and let off the brake quickly. i gathered its a loose connection so i set about checking behind the fuseboard and in the engine bay and made sure the battery had a good contact.
whilst i was in the car with it runnin my old man started playing with connections in the bay to see if they had any impact oin the clocks and when he put his hand on the feed to the coilpack (mainly the wires) it would mess with the clocks, if you played with the plug too much the car would cut out. i done this once and the car cut out and didnt start again. turns out the coilpack was knackered but ive just had a replacment now and i get 1 of 2 things happening.
key in start the car it turns over and wont fire (similar to if you have a flat battery)
or
key in turn it over it fires up and dies after a couple of seconds idling (the first time i did this itidled and revved for about 30 seconds then cut out)
can anybody shed somelight on the starting problem being the main one atm then tell me whats going on with the clocks? i have a feeling its all going to come down to this plug ontop of the coilpack but i dont play with pugs lol.
want to sell this car pretty soon so i need it running and functioning properly

that was my first reaction but the ones i can find seem ok, we did find a load of water in the offside rear cluster but weve emptied that out now and dried it and i cant start the bloody thing to check if the clocks start dancing again

Hi mate welcome to the site, not a great introduction lol
I could of saved you money and sold you my spare coil pack lol
To me it sounds like something to do with your alternator or something leading up to your battery, they are the first things i would be checking, like you said a loose wire may be the problem so when you hit a bump it loosens the wire causing a very weak connection, also id look at charging your car battery just to see how long it will run for once charged

There is an earth strap that goes from the battery to the gearbox.
It seems to rot with age, and that is a fairly common fault.

lol it was only £30 from GSF and i dont paticularly care its my sisters money ha. i fork out enough on my french peice of **** the batt is on charge now going to leave it over night and see whats happening then, but i cant work out why the car would stop running in the first place, its leading me in allsorts of directions and the coilpack feed seems the likley suspect.
when i first got in it today and put the key in after fitting the new pack the relays were going like the clappers by my knees and the dash is playing games, its truly got a mind of its own!

If in doubt, run one jump lead from the earth pole of the battery directly to the engine block.

just went out and looked at it and cant fault you guys one of the 2 cables being earthed there was hanging on by 1 thread of cable! so im guessing thats the issue and it should sort it!
its not the one from the neg of the battery tho, which could explain the dash is its coming from inside...

we had very similar on ours, did the same, replaced the earth strap, turned out to be a duff battery - new battery fitted, been fine since, and that was 18months ago.
