cheers for the reply panason1c - i was already aware of the impact on the rolling circumference and speed reading. im not too concerned by 3% lower readings

My question was, is it ok to run 50's on the front and 55's on the rear (or vice versa).

Dont get me wrong, ideally I would just buy 2x 55's - but you cannot ignore the difference in price for 50's - especially at xmas time!

I was planning on doing this in the new year, but with yet more snow forcast, I really need to lose my 'option' Pirelli Nero 17's and get something a bit more suited to snow and ice.

I know running 2 different profiles isnt ideal, but if both are ok to run individually, could they really cause that much bother paired up?

Haha I wont even ask about running Sirrys up front and Vortex's at the back Razz

It wnt mater just so long as the two on the front axle are the same you can have a 14" and a 17" wheel on the back if ya like

I would think the only issue with that would be one of insurance cover?.....your insurance might be affected if you had a bump and the mix of tyre sizes was involved due to a handling issue.

Another problem would be that you would need to carry two spare tyres, one of each size, otherwise you would be breaking the law if you mixed two different tyre sizes on the same axle in the event of having a puncture.

ps........... a 'spacesaver' spare wheel is the only exception to the rule of requiring both tyres on the axle to be the same size, etc.

Well both tyres would be identical per axle - baring a puncture and needing a space saver being the exception.

I suppose the implications of an insurance company deeming a 2x2 mix of tyre profiles unsafe are not to be taken lightly. I guess its looking more like im buying two 55s then!!

Just something thats come to mind, I see there are a lot of folks on here who run 50s all round rather than the factory/recommended 55s - so would that itself not have insurance implications come claim time?

I think the mix of different sizes on the two axles might be of more concern to an insurance company due to having more of an effect on the handling than same size tyres all round.

Just had a thought...............A possible problem of fitting non-matching profiles to a vehicle fitted with ABS would create different rolling diameters between the two axles and would probably cause the ABS to disable and the light to stay on due to the abs system ecu being 'confused' by receiving signals from each wheel sensor that dont match the same rpm.

Yeah that had crossed my mind too mate.

There doesnt seem to be a very good selection of 55s to choose from compared to the 50 range.
Reading up on the reviews, it would also seem the Pirelli P6000 (55s) which I already have are useless in winter conditions, as are Toyo T1R Proxes which was gonna be my second tyre choice.

Now im wondering if it would be better to get 4 new 50s rather than 2 new 55s.

Shame 4x 50's still work out more expensive than 2x 55s lol

If you going for 4x 50 I would recomend the Bridgestones EZ300 I have got these on mine and they are a really good tyre. I first had them on last year and have done 30k on them and have only just replaced the fronts.

The arent bad on price either. I think blackcircles.co.uk are dong them for £55 each.

I would have thought this too. I have 55's on the front and 50's on the back (temporarily I might add), it doesn't disable the ABS. Feels like it affects heavy breaking slightly though. Will soon be getting 50s all round when i get some moolahh.
